I used to like Diskeeper, but the latest 2007 version is too bloated,O&O 8.5 is very good.

Don't bother buying a defrag program. The one that comes with Windows is good enough.

Amen to that. The new version 8 is outstanding, and beats Diskeeper hands down - especially in terms of GUI and off line defrag of NTFS system and page files.

To a certain extent I think disk defragmenters are somewhat over rated---the one that comes with windows will do the job but its slow and lacks options. But only if your disk is really fragmented will it show a measurable performance hit. So keeping fragments under control is requirement one. Beyond that there are some other considerations. (1) Its nice to have a disk defragmenter that works in the background constantly cleaning up fragments while you create them---as long as the slice of processor time is small its no hit on system
performance---unless you are a gamer running a system challenging game, few will ever notice---but lacking background scanning---a on demand scan takes longer. (2) While windows is running, a disk defragger can move program files but usually not windows files---so free space on your hard-drive can get fragmented--leaving no large blocks to put really large files. And any defragmenter that tackles windows system files therefore has to run in dos before windows loads. (3) That little ole cheapskate me wants the defragmenter to be freeware.

I have been playing around with a program called iobit smart defrag which is still in beta form---it does defrag in the background but does not yet move system files---but iobit is bringing updates out about once a month, promises to add a dos option soon, and is even playing around with a version of hyperfetch they plan to implement also. There is one major problem now with some XP pro systems--you must shut down the background defrag which takes a second or so--or windows will not shut down---its now up to ver 2.01 beta. Check it out if any care to---just google iobit smart defrag.

No - it does not run in "DOS." PerfectDisk runs the offline defrag during the WINDOWS bootcycle in the WINDOWS boot sequence prior to loading Windows drivers.

Free is not a valid criterion except for Cheap Charlies.

P/D is the only one I know of that graphically shows you how much space is being used by the MFT Reserved Zone under NTFS. That area can eventually CAUSE constant fragmentation because Microsoft insists on putting it smack in the middle of a drive.

Version 8.0.45 doesn't work on Vista. Do you have a version that does?

version 8.0.48 is the latest atm.

Another myth without proof.

The burden of proof is on the people making the claims that it's worthwhile, not vice versa.

I'm not signing up just for one PDF, if you really want me to read it PM me and you can email it to me or something.

Oh and what do you think of this article explaining the differences in the Vista defrag tool, in particular the answer to "When I dual-boot into Windows XP, the defrag results are different from Windows Vista. Why?" that states that Vista doesn't defrag files over 64M because MS doesn't feel it's worthwhile?

XFS Progs is a good tool to defrag XFS systems, ( That I use instead of EXT3 to manipulate AVI files created in Blender ).
But I never saw Real necessity of this tool for being used like windozers, windows degrade performance and can cause errors in the file system if some chunks of the files are too fragmented.
Normally, is better to have a super freighter HDD and move to one for another and recopy back again after a reformat, XFS reports after this , eveything is OK and no defrag needed.

I just use a Windows Defrag tool. But very rarely. Frankly, I don't see any sufficient reason for defragmentation nowadays. Now the drive sector size is too small compared to the size of files. Besides, now repositioning of HDD head is fast enough, which makes defragmentation pluses very doubtful.
