Everytime my wife wants me to do some tech support on the ipad I am stumped. I don't get their logic.

I am the same way. I find iOS to be WAY more difficult to use than android or windows. Seriously don't get it.

If you guys can't figure out how to use nearly any Apple product in about 10 seconds you need to turn in your "nerd/geek-card".

Seriously my dislike for all things Apple has to do with it being OVERLY simple, locked down so I can only do what Apple approves AND seriously overpriced not because it's difficult to use.

Also IME if you set somebody up with a Mac/Ipad etc you don't NEED to provide much in the way of support.

Like I said, it is not for logical people.

Some Apple configuration stuff makes no sense if you're used to doing (relatively) what you want in Windows or Android ... it CAN be annoying but it's usually due to being "dumbed-down".

Annoying and complex/difficult are two different things.

Android is Linux on a touch interface. So the the geekier crowd don't get that the common man don't need the command line, tinkering, or random glitches that come with Linux.

WIth auto backup of apps and files for free for the first 15GB, resetting an IPhone is much less stressful than doing the same for an Android product.

I'm surprised at this point that some group hasn't taken a bunch of technophobes and given some an ipad and some an android tablet/chromebook and done a survey to see which group enjoyed the experience the most and/or which group actually started using the gear. Unfortunately unless you've used both of them extensively, we get habituated to using it one way or the other, which makes evaluating it hard to do since we're just already used to doing it a certain way.

If its simple they will use it. Raise idiots, IMHO.
iOS has more stable apps.

Wyze cam app downloaded faster in Android, but the video files were junk unreadable garbage.
Wyze's iOS version was took an the length of the video to download but the files were playabl.e

Ring's iOS app never hangs while trying to load a stream.
Ring's Android app hangs frequently.

Some personal experience

Unfortunately, that's probably (forgive the pun) not an apples to apples comparison. Unless you run the apps on near identical hardware, and unless you can compare the codebase of both apps, there's no real way to tell where the problem is. Could be the hardware was better on the iOS device vs the android device. Or the coding was better for iOS.

Personally, from my limited experience with apple stuff - at this point I think the differences between the two are relatively minor. But in the case of my father, since he's such a newb and for whatever reason hesitant to do anything online, if once is a little easier then the other for a newb, it might be worth considering. Although I'm still leaning towards a chromebook for him just so I'd have an easier time of offering him any help. If i decide he'd be better off with a touch screen, then maybe I'd go with one of the cheaper Ipad's since I think the cheaper ipads run smoother then the cheaper android tablets. Although the last time I bought an android tablet was a couple years ago.

I forgot to mention the details.
Pixel 2 has better hardware and the latest Android compared to the IPhone 6 running iOS 12. So the Android has hardware and the latest OS.

I'm saying if you remove any critical from everything then you don't have to critically think anymore.

*shrug* not sure what to say - i've only ever had android phones. And for the most part, stability hasn't been an issue. The only app on my current phone (samsung note 10) that i can think of that routinely has a glitch is the reddit app. It sometimes fails to load an article when i click a link to one.

I suppose one point in apples favor is the fact that there aren't nearly as many options/variables when it comes to hardware and operating system since they control it all and there aren't any 3rd parties modifying the OS or hardware. So I wouldn't be too surprised if someone did do some sort of objective analysis, iOS devices were overall more stable than android. But if you narrowed the android devices down to a narrow selection, i'm betting they'd be more or less even.

But to go back to my original question - unless I get him some really cheap off the wall device, i don't think I'll have to worry too much about stability since he probably won't ever get past the browser or maybe facebook.

I still suggest an inexpensive slightly older ipad as by far the best option.

It will be better for him and trust me ... the "learning-curve" for you is NOT steep at all despite claims to the contrary. Anything you do have trouble with is a 10-second Google away.
