you want a free defragmenter program? check it out Defraggler but it is not very fast as Deskeeper Premier Professional.

Windows one keeps freezing? I've never had that problem. Something might be very wrong if it freezes. Try a CHKDSK /F before you defrag.

I'll say- it got stuck at 20%. I didn't have the patience enough to let it finish.

Don't know about "best" but I've had good luck with Contig & Power Defrag.

You just take the free contig download from Microsoft here,

then make a folder for it and put that folder under your Program Files. You don't "install" contig, you just stick it in a folder and let it sit there.

Then into that same folder with contig, get the free GUI that runs contig, called Power Defragmenter. For example, one source for that is here.

Remember, install Power Defrag into the SAME FOLDER where contig is sitting.

So it's Power Defrag that you want to put onto your Start / All Programs menu. It will then take care of the contig program.

Works great with Windows XP, I don't know about Vista. Free.

I always run its 2 - pass PowerMode option.

That is too bad but I am using Diskeeper Premier Professional anyway.

Paying for a defrag tool is pointless, fix the issue you're having with the bundled one and/or just stop worrying about it.

The bundled version is inadiquate, resource intensive, inhibits productivity, inefficiant at the job, and lacks any sort of intelligence to know when you are not using the computer.

Diskeeper Pro Premier is very transparent and you often forget it's even there.

Anyways SSDs will make diskeeper nearly useless in a few years.

I personally use the freeware product JKDefrag (command line based) with the JKDefrag GUI front end. You can download the GUI from here: http://www.emro.nl/freeware/ . Once you run it, the program will automatically grab the latest version of JKDefrag.

By far the best defrag program that I have used to date.

Do the third-party defraggers come with spell checkers? (Sorry, I had to...)

Anyway, you don't say what OS this is on, but the Vista defragger resolves all of those issues.

Considering that the job itself is pretty pointless I don't think it matters how inadequate the tool is at that job. Schedule it manually when you know you won't be using the computer and don't worry about it.

Diskeeper Pro Premier is very transparent and you often forget it's even there.

Except for the fact that you just dropped $130 bucks for software and maintenance for something that isn't even necessary.

Anyways SSDs will make diskeeper nearly useless in a few years.

IMO Diskeeper has been useless for years already.

Yea I know what you are talking about Defraggler but it does a good job isn't it? I don't care if it slow or fast but the bottom line is to get the job done.

Diskeeper FTW! I am using the Pro 2007 version, and it's been fast, reliable and most importantly, safe; never had a single problem with it so far.

i just tried raxco perfect disk the other day and very impressed with it, i have been a diskeeper user for years but wanted to try something different. i dislike diskeeper 2007 as it runs in the background all the time.
