I've got a friend who has never read a Terry Pratchett book before, but has previously expressed an interest. So, seeing as it's his birthday (which was actually a few days ago) I wanted to get him a Diskworld book.

I don't want to start at the beginning. I really don't think the Rincewind books were his best, and I want him to have as good a first impressions as possible. So I was thinking preferably one of the ones with the Watch, or Witches storylines, or some other; maybe Death might be good too? I heard Thud! was good since it introduced a lot of the recurring characters well (I haven't read Thud for a while), as well as Feet of Clay, but I wanted to get your opinion.

I actually liked Rincewind, the Librarian and the Luggage a lot. But if you don't want to start with those I'd say Guard! Guards! is a good one to start. Mort is good too, depends a bit on what kind of jokes he prefers.

Try suggesting the movies, they're on Netflix streaming (Colour of Magic, Hogfather).

I haven't read any of the Discworld books, just Good Omens (which was fun)

I was thinking about Good Omens too. Guards Guards seems a good place to start, I liked the dragon.

So. Guards Guards, or Good Omens. I think my friend would really appreciate the humor of Good Omens, but then, he'd probably enjoy Guards Guards too...

Spoiler question: Does Rincewind stay a magicless idiot throughout the books, or does he ever get competent?

Spoiler answer:
He does save the world a few times, but is pretty much always cowardly and incompetent.

OP, it's Discworld...

The Watch, Witches, and Wizards books are generally the best imo.
