f*ck mom and pop shops, I've been to about 2 dozen in my life, I always order the same thing - an Apple Fritter, and without fail I'm left disappointed every time because there's never any damn Apple in it.

Not saying chains are any better, but at least with a chain I know what I'm getting before, with mom and pops you might get your hopes up thinking "this one will be different"

nope...

I've had good luck with my local Honey Dew Donuts location. It's a chain so YMMV.
Dunkins has been going downhill for a while and I blame their new menu items. Quit trying to push pseudo deli sandwiches and go back to coffee and donuts!

Ever try Dunkins coffee black? Bleh

Fresh warm donuts > room temp donuts.

That's the brilliance of Krispy Kreme, you don't have to be at a donut shop at 6am to get a decent donut.

Basically all other donut shops are run like Little Caesers makes pizza.

If it's already cooked before you get there, are you really getting quality?

Never been to a good mom and pop donut shop I see. Sorry, I have had good Donuts and they put the freshest Krispy Kreams to shame.

Spoke with a relative who works for a mini-mall developer. It's interesting to note that they consider Panera a competitor to Krsipy Kream, DnD and the rest. Also, frame Dunkin and Tim Hortons as nothing more than Coffee shops that sell other crap. They sell coffee but try to cross sell everything else. So donut quality is not a big driver.

I thought that was an interesting perspective.

FWIW: If anyone is ever in the Buffalo, NY area get some peanut donuts. They are donuts with peanut crumbs on the outside. I think it is a glazed with pesnuts where the peanuts are added while the glaze is wet. They are delicious. Even at DnD and Tim Hortons. Itis a WIN.

I mean.... how long does it take to cook a donut? Why not just make them MTO?

To cook, just a few minutes. To make, a long time. Yeast donuts are like any enriched bread, takes around 6 hours to make.

Around Houston they have Shipley's which isn't bad. I actually like their cake donuts more than their yeast. Their yeast donuts are really airy and have that glazed oily sheen. I just want a nice dry plain old-fashioned donut. I agree though, Dunkin's has gotten a lot worse over the years. Can't even find powdered donuts there.

There's a great little Asian owned Mom & Pop Donut place a mile or so from my house. I give it the thumbsup.

I couldn't even tell you where a Dunkin Donuts is around here. They just don't have the presence here in SoCal that they do on the east coast.

Mom and pop and even then they can vary hugely in quality. I'd say hit up a few different local shops and you'll find one you enjoy. I was once a doughnut addict but I guess I got burnt out which is a good thing for my heart.

The mom and pop shop I'm most familiar with, their cinnamon rolls and apple fritters are too awesome to bother getting any of their donuts

Down here, it is the regional stores of Southern Maid. I am not crazy about donuts. They are ok but not that great IMO.

I'm not a fan of any of the large chains.

In the Seattle area, Top Pot is my absolute favorite. Not cheap, but great quality and flavor. I'd take a day-old Top Pot over a fresh hot Krispy Kreme any day of the week.
