I know that multiple companies make DSL Modem/Router combos, and there has been much discussion about routers, but what is the best combonation of the dsl modem and a router? My friend has the cisco 675 router/dslmodem, and it pleased with it.

any opinions?
thanks,
k

I just got the SMC Barricade 4 port 10/100 and it does the job just perfect. I have three PCs networked together all with Cable modem. Has a built in print server (parrallel port) and a com port. Iprob paid to much. but Hey to have all of these pc's on a cable modem is just SWEET!

I just got the SMC Barricade (4 port) as well, but in my new home, I actually have Cat 5 wiring going from my basement to 6 wired locations. Can anyone tell me the options to expand the Barricade's 3 feeds to go to all 6 feeds? I do not necessarily need to use all 6 ports at once. I'm mainly looking to get internet access and to play the occasional networked game between a couple of computers.

Oh, and if it's any consolation, I'm looking to use both PCs and Macs on this network...

Thanks!

kohutek,

If the question is what is the best DSL/router combo, as in all in one, the Cisco 675 is it. If what you were really trying to ask is what is the best DSL router to ADD to a DSL modem, you'll get many different opinions.

I use the Linksys BEFSR41 and love it.

Add a switch.

Hey Solah and cats

I recently added the same configuration... but I kind of jerry-rigged it from some tech-fred off of http://8wire.com. It works for me but you might want to hit up those guys to take it a step further. They seem to be up to speed on this networking garb.

yes, I am speaking of dsl/router combo. 10/100 switches can be had anywhere for cheap, and i would think that a [dsl/router combo] + switch would be cheaper than dsl modem + [router/switch] ... Just my opinion, although that could be wrong.

I think the physical layout of the network would be a little easier to understand, as all the actual NATing/DHCP/Routing/anything else is done at exactly one place, which also holds all the config. info for the DSL also -- that instead of having a modem to configure + a separate router unite to configure.

That's my take; is a DSL modem + router/switch cheaper than say a Cisco 675/673 [adsl/sdsl] + 10/100 switch? Also, who manufactures just DSL modems [not router/switch]? Is there a way to buy cisco products without becoming a cisco reseller? I ask because I'd like to have the DSL company just have the telco hit the switch, give me some numbers, and let me use my own stuff [which I purchased separately, ie cheap].

thanks!

The 675 IS a DSL modem and router rolled in to one. But, it's not a switch. If you were to buy a single unit that did all; DSL modem/router/switch, it would cost substantially MORE then getting the 675 and a switch. This is because that type of equipment is targeted at the industrial user.

Russ, i am aware that the 675 is a router/dsl modem combo. My question is, is it cheaper to get a (router/switch and a dsl modem) than to get a {router/dsl modem [like the cisco] and a cheap 10/100 switch)? If it is cheaper to get the sepearate dsl modem + a router/switch, what kind of DSL modem should I look in to? Are there other manufacturers of modem/router combos like the cisco 675? Where can I locate the 675, for example.

I know that router/switches are abundant, and people vary widely in preference; this topic has been beat to death here. However, there has been little to no discussion on Router/Modem combos, or even simply just DSL modems. Any advice as to those particular items is of great interest.

Thanks,
