Best Dual Slot 1 Motherboad

ONE THAT IS NOT A VIA CHIPSET i curently have a tyan 1834D i believe and it has been ok up untill i have been having problems with the via chipset and my geforce3 ti 500 the whole infinite loop problem any other recomendations

The 440BX/440GX both offer rock solid SMP on Slot 1 platforms. Your best bets are the 440BX based Tyan Tiger 100 (1832), Supermicro P6DBE, or Intel L440BX. The 440GX starts getting pricy. They both usually have nothing fancy and only support 100Mhz FSB and 2X AGP but they run rock solid.

The OR840 and other i840 based mobos do come in Slot 1. I thought about recomending it but they are horrible expensive. This compounded by a Catch-22. You can save money by using the SDRAM version. The memory controller hub really cuts into performance. The RDRAM version used the more costly Rambus RIMMs. being dual-channel, the RIMMs must be installed in pairs and any unpopulated slots must have CRIMMs. Having worked with the boards I can say they are great and rock stable. Just very expensive at around $350 - $500 depending on what is included (LAN, SCSI, etc.)

Find an old Asus P2B-D. Rock solid, and they run at 133 MHz just fine, too.

If you don't want a Via chipset I would have to say go with a 440BX mobo from Intel. It's getting a little dated but it's the best dual PIII board I've worked on.

You can get the OR840's on ebay for under 150 dollars. Or you can goto the for Sale for trade forums here and at ars technica and 2cpu.com and get them off of ppl for around 99 to 120 dollars. I just seen 3 of them go from 2cpu.com for sale forums for around 99 dollars. Memory isn't as exspensive as ppl think. If you go dual you have to be prepare to spend the extra dollar anyways.

it really comes down to how much money u got.

440BX chipset is the way to go with a slot 1 mobo

some good ones are the soyo lineup of sy6ba+iii, plus 4 or plus 100

soyo may not be known for their dual mainboards, but i've had practically no problems with their sy-d6iba2 board. rocksolid, and softfsb works with it. but i would consider a asus p2b-d, particularly the revision that supports coppermines. i've heard good things about it.
