Im so confused atomizers cartomizers clearomizers plastic bad get pyrex....
Cartomizer = a cheap, non-refillable tank that comes with fluid already in it.
Atomizer = a refillable tank, sometimes able to be taken apart for cleaning, that you can refill.
Clearomizer = Same as an atomizer, but clear so that you can see the fluid. The acidity of some fluids tend to crack the plastic, so look for a good glass/pyrex one.
And just make sure your tank is the same size as your battery. eGo-T and eGo-C are pretty common sized batteries.

juice question. are juice cartridges proprietary? what i want to try a flavor that the brand of ecig i buy does not offer?
im really intersted in the V2 but Halo has some interesting flavors.
I picked up a Joyetech eVic about a month ago. Adjustable voltage/wattage. Works pretty well. Plus, you can connect it to your computer and download new software as it comes available.
I also grabbed a couple of tanks at the same time. Both hold a fair amount of juice so I don't have to refill during the day.
As you can see there is a ton of choices. To answer your question directly, the V2 and Halo cartridges are not proprietary. Most are not, just seems like they are since there is so many different thread sizes. The V2 and Halo cartridges are KR808D-1 threaded.
I been vaping a few months as i slowly lower the number of cigarettes, yesterday was my first no cigarette day! i haven't tried any prefilled cartridges or cigarette looking devices. I can certainly see how prefilled may be more welcoming to newbies. It seems the main drawback of the cig-a-like devices is the battery size. also the cartridges that are prefilled can often be refilled if you wanted. i use 510 threaded cartomizers(cartridge) and i can get anywhere from 3 to 10 days on one $2 cart.

and if you really want to be confused read that forum for a while...
explain the thread size to me. i dont understand what that means or why its considered when selecting a ecig.

The six most common connection thread types are 401, 510, 801 (Penstyle), 901, 4081, and E9. So, what is the difference between these? There are three characteristics that determine each of these types: Barrel size (diameter of the threads), thread pitch (the spacing of the threads), and gender of the battery connection (male if the battery screws into the atomizer and female if the atomizer screws into the battery).
I know, I know - I should just quit smoking... I'll save that goal for when I'm less stressed out, but right now I'm just looking for an option a bit better on my lungs. Any brands you guys recommend? I'm not a very heavy smoker (a pack every 3 or 4 days), if that makes a difference.

I've been vaping since 4/1/2010. Haven't smoked a cig since. Was at 2 packs/day. I've been through a number of models. Currently I use one of these and highly recommend it:

There's not really any benefit of one over the other...it just depends on what your battery has...and there are adapters for use when you want to use a tank/cartomizer on a different thread than you have.
My hardware all has 510 fittings. I think that's the most common fitting in use with the widest variety of cartomizer/tank options.

I just tried a Kanger ProTank and I was really impressed. Best flavor i've experienced from a pre-built atomizer. It uses pyrex glass instead of plastic.
