I'm looking for suggestions for ear muffs for hearing protection in the garage. Same for safety glasses. I've got a bit of a large nose, so any that can accommodate that would be great. I already have some safety glasses but they're a bit hard to see through.

Comfort is definitely key with ear muffs. I don't want them to hurt or discourage me from using them.

Like you said comfort is key. You won't wear them if they are uncomfortable. With that said, regarding safety glasses. I've been thru countless pairs. These by faaaar are the comfiest and most durable I've ever used. (I've got a big head and nose)

What on earth are you doing in your garage that you need hearing protection?

I use foam ear plugs when operating my gas trimmer sometimes but there really isn't anything else I feel the need to have hearing protection when operating. I have an air compressor and various powered saw and drills.

I use ear protection designed for gun ranges, purchased from Cabelas

Air hammer, air compressor... just general hammering and such can be too loud for me. Especially in closed spaces. I don't want ear plugs because those are difficult to deal with when working on a car. I want something that's easy to slip on and off my head but still comfortable for longer use.

How much air hammering are you doing? Air compressors aren't loud enough to cause hearing damage unless you're right next to it and it is running constantly.

You may regret that some day. If I could go back in time I'd have hearing protection at anything even approaching "loud", and that would include music in most bars and clubs. Lawn mowers, shooting a .22 outside, circular saw, and a lot more of the time I spent on factory floors thinking that I was invincible.

The factory floors and the guns probably did you in more than anything. I've been to many clubs and concerts back in my youth and other than some very minor tinnitus I have little hearing loss and I've spent plenty of time in my garage around saws and power tools. Motorcycling and surfing has probably done the most damage to my hearing.

Give it some more time and get back to us. Funny (not really) how that works. :\

Mostly I have tinnitus and some difficulty following conversations in loud environments. I haven't had my hearing tested in years (oddly enough, the last time was probably -prior- to taking one of those factory jobs), so don't know exactly what kind of hearing loss I might have. It's very hard for me to say which things damaged my hearing. The factories I worked in briefly weren't that loud and nobody wore hearing protection except on a few jobs.

Yup, hearing loss is something you never worry about until its too late. If you're using a power tool its probably worth throwing some muffs on long term.

i use the 3M red muffs when shooting, and the 3M classic plugs when riding. for safety glasses i just have some generic polycarbonate ones. less than $50 for all three i think

Foam ear plugs do a better job stopping noise, but are not as easy to put in and take out.

I worked for 18 years at a forge where it was so loud you had to yell with your mouth within a foot of someone's ear to be heard when all the presses were running. About a third of all communication was done with homegrown hand signals.
