dont go to school solely for its reputation in your field--but rather the overall experience.

thats why id much rather go to, say, northwestern, than university of chicago.

personally, the only schools i would ever consider attending aside from Texas are [in order]:

Michigan
Washington
California-Santa Cruz
Virginia
Colorado
Michigan State

some others that are okay are Maryland, Penn State, Indiana, North Carolina, Wisconsin

all are reputable, and provide good student life (lively town, enthusiastic students, etc)

come join us (well... me and fatalbo ) at the UW... we're getting a nice brand spanking new CSE building this year... microsoft and intel employ more graduates from us than any other school. we are better at EE/CS than northwestern and columbia, that's for sure... not as prestigious as columbia though (name, reputation).

we have a really beautiful campus btw.

btw i have a feeling you won't like CMU... just a hunch, given why you don't like MIT and Caltech

also try cornell, princeton, u of t-austin, u of i - urbana champaign

What? You and who? I'm leaving for six months, remember?

But yes, we are getting a new building, which will be opened this coming fall.

I would recommend a state college since you want an ungeeky school.

Ga. Tech located at Atlanta..(Welcome to Atlanta..always something going on there) excellent EE program

North Carolina State (If it isn't happening at State then you have Duke or UNC in a 25 minute drive) Great EE/CompE double major program plus getting alot of local corporate backing in the IT field

U of Texas (Large diverse school with plenty of partying) Alot of up and coming tech companies were there if they survived the tech crash.

University of Michigan has a GREAT EECS program. Just be prepared to work your butt off for 20 hours a day.

Columbia isn't ranked very highly, but it's a wonderful school and you'll get a great experience. The fact that it's in NYC will definitely be a boon to your job prospects, and you'll be able to nag internships. Another plus side is that Columbia SEAS isn't very difficult to get into (relatively speaking).

If you want some smaller programs that are quite strong, you can also check out:

Rice, Harvard, Yale, JHU (if you're a good student, they may even offer you a spot in their accelerated master's program, which you generally apply for junior year; the dean sent me a letter when I was accepted there for undergrad), Dartmouth, GaTech.

For larger programs that are quite strong:

Cornell, Princeton, UT-Austin, UMich.

I REPEAT...U DO NOT WANT TO DOUBLE MAJOR IN THOSE MAJORS...I HAVE YET TO FIND ONE PERSON WHO HAS........my bro goes to northwestern....but go there for med and liberal stuff.....stanford is good...if u have the grades and the money....i heard carnegie mellon has a good cs program.......UCberk's is really good (my friend is a cs major there)....

well, u haven't even got ur acceptance letters back yet.....if u got accepted to all those schools...THEN...post a thread about this......don't get ahead of urself man....

i attend UCSD..i love the setting here....GREAT weather....laid back atmosphere.....great weather......all around good school...strong engineering programs...great weather....and great weather...
hmm...what else..?..

oh yeah..great weather.....moderate all year long.....never too dry, not humid, ocean's a walk a way....really really nice......summer aren't THAT hot, and the coldest winter night here is like mid 40 degrees...

EDIT: i'm EE major btw...i attempted w/ a ICAM minor (blah computing arts somethingforgotbleh) .....the workload was too much...

Rice University.

You're from Houston. Do you go there?

Nope, I slacked off in high school, so I know I wouldn't have gotten accepted if I applied. I go to University of Houston right now. I am studying really hard and I hope to go to grad school at Rice after I graduate from UH.

Georgia Tech is not an ungeeky school. It is small, almost all men, and extremely geeky. The same applies to carnegie mellon

If I had it to do over again, I would have chosen Illinois or UT-Austin.

Berkeley, if you can get in. Some of the smartest/most successful do-it-yourselfers I've ever met have come from there.

But those are insane levels!! :Q

Being out-of state you should go to another respected school--hopefully it'll be State so you can save some money.
