I'm thinking about college and I want to go into EE and CS, probably a double major, but I dunno yet. I am thinking about:

[*]Northwestern
[*]Stanford
[*]Carnegie Mellon
[*]UC - Berkely
[*]Columbia

I am not interested in MIT and Caltec. I've seen both and don't like them.

What are you suggestions?

As well, in April I will be taking a trip from Maine, to Baltimore (to see mah bro at JHU), then around NY area, then back to Maine. Any suggestions of good colleges to see around that area? I will definitely see UPenn, Carnagie Mellon, and Columbia, but what about some others?

Thanks!

Penn State is a good all-around engineering school (although better known for their mechanical/aerospace engineering).

The ones you have mentioned are excellent.

There are also some excellent state schools... Purdue (as the other poster mentioned), Georgia Tech, University of Texas at Austin, North Carolina State.

Look around at a LOT of schools, if you have time. You may fall in love with one you never considered. Get specific info on programs/majors (schools can vary considerably)... and narrow your choices down to ones you like and ones you can afford (apply to a few that you can't afford, just in case money, for some reason, doesn't end up an issue).

Best of luck!

i read in like the source or blender or some sort of free magazine where they have a college for gaming...

If you want to go to college for counter-strike, i'd imagine that's where you would go

UC Berkeley. The atmosphere is great and the area is so culturally diverse.

Since you don't like in California, you have next to 0 chance of getting into Berekely. 90% of the spots are reserved for in-state applicants, and the other 10% are competed for by virtually everyone nationwide. MIT is easier to get into than Berkeley for out of California students. Sorry to burst your bubble.

Don't get too dismissive, Elemental. I got into Berkeley, and I'm from NC. It can be done.... there's no reason to dismiss it at this level.

Yes, but even they said it themselves. When I went to see Berkely/Stanford/UCLA, I heard that they give preference to the people who live in California first...

Of course they give preference... especially Berkeley and UCLA--they're supported by the State of California. Stanford is private, btw.

But, you can still get in... its not impossible. If you really like it, apply. If I remember correctly, Berkeley wasn't that horribly expensive to apply (although that was in 1996).

Just out of curiosity, anyone have any suggestions for smaller colleges with phenomenal CS programs, or is that an oxymoron?

berkeley EECS admit rate - 11%

No actually, I am really not interested. MIT is ugly as hell, I hate the campus. Plus, IMO, both colleges are for nerds and are total boredom. They are too focused on Math/Science and dun offer a whole lotta diversity.

Although, I probably wouldn't get accepted even if I did like them.

CalTech isn't for everyone. I think it's great for grad school, once you know what you want to do. But undergrad you want a lot more academic diversity.
It's good to apply there just to see if you can get in, though.
<--- got wait listed at Caltech, but didn't want to wait: See my previous post

MIT has the largest humanities department in the country (that's because all the humanities are in one giant department ). The campus isn't that bad and, on the bright side, Boston is full of colleges so you can meet many non-nerdy people pretty easily.

Columbia has decent EE/CS departments.... both offer a lot in terms of research and other internships.... but the best part of columbia is the well rounded education that you get...

Assuming ~90% were from in-state or foreign (82% in state, 7% foreign) and they had 3,316 applied and 11% accepted (for a total of 365), and only 10% came from out of state...than out of every applicant that was accepted, only 37 came from out of state.
