Best electric shaver

The gf is pissed that I'm too lazy to shave, so I'm considering getting an electric... What I require:

* FAST shaving
* Minimal cleaning
* Reasonably close shave

Questions:

1. What's the best electric shaver?
2. Foil shaver or rotary? Wet or dry?
3. What do you use to "trim" the facial hair (to leave, say, nice looking stubble) instead of shaving it off?

------ Update ------

my two top candidates so far are:

* Braun Activator 8585: $128
* Braun 360 8995: $158

Anyone know of any B&M stores that sell cheap electric shavers, in case I need to return it?

------ Update 2 ------

I bought the Braun 360 at Best Buy for ~$170. More expensive than Amazon, but also easier to return it if I'm not happy.

After the first run, I was pleasantly surprised. Shaving was very quick, the trimmer came in handy cause I had a long beard, and the end result was very smooth. There were a few spots I had trouble with just under my jaw and around my neck, but I think for the first run, it went very well.

Thanks for advice folks

It cleans itself. I've had it for almost 2 years and I have been very satisfied with it.

I agree about the high end Braun foil shavers. My only complaint is that I have problems getting some of my neck hairs with them. However, they are indeed better than the Norelco style shavers.

I hate electric shavers because I have yet to find one that lasts longer than a year even with regular cleaning and maintenance of the shaver. My beard is just to thick so I stick to a regular good 'ole 3 bladed razor.

Panasonic wet/dry. Used wet with foam for close shave without abrasion. Washes up easily with soap and water.

I'd love a good recommendation because I've tried everything. My beard is like wire stubble growing through rice paper. Electric shavers can't get close enough and blades leave my face looking like I was in a knife fight and lost.

The best electric I've had was the Braun Synchro, but I've worn out 3 of these at $100+ each and never got more than 1 year out of any of them including daily cleaning and spending $40 to replace the heads every 6 months.

I've also had the Activator 8585 for almost 2 years and I love it. Unfortunately, it's now semi-broken since my cat knocked it off the sink (a couple small holes in the foil and will no longer charge on the stand, have to plug it in manually). Still functional, but I'm thinking of upgrading to a Braun 360 (8995) soon. By the way, I never once changed the foil or blades in the 1.5 years+ that I had the thing, and it still gives a comfortable shave as long as it's kept clean.

Same one I have, it's pretty decent.

Edit: I lied, I have an 8595
Edit2: Can I use the new 360 complete foil in my 8595?

I've never changed the blades either. It's been almost two years since I got it. Some people complain that the cartridges are a bit expensive, but $15 will get you a 3-pack. I dont think it's such a financial burden.

another vote for the Panasonics, self cleaning takes forever but the sucker works so good. I shave in the shower with mine and it gives an amazing shave. Took my skin a week or 2 to really grow accustom to it, but I love it now.

I'll second that. I've had mine about 18 months and it's the best shaver I've ever used.

Another vote for the Braun 8585. I've had mine for 2 years, it's still going strong, is very fast and cuts well.

With my Panny I get a damn close shave, afterwards if I feel my skin it's smooth. It's not as good as I got with a Mach 3 because I definitely notice/feel stubble coming back much faster than with a razor. But, I use it every morning and it only takes 30 seconds so it doesn't bother me. And I can get an awesome shave completely dry if I had tried that with a Mach 3 my skin would have hated it.

I have a slightly older version of this razor and it works very well still.

If you aren't in a hurry they will sometimes go on sale at Amazon.
