Best electronic extended warranty plan?

I'm going to buy a Sony DSC-U20 digital camera really soon, and they're basically the same price at all the stores $199. So I'm trying to decide WHERE to buy it from so that I can get the BEST 'extended warranty' plan. Does anyone have any experience with which store has the most comprehensive for the $$? I *HEARD* that CompUSA's extended warranty's are foolproof, that even if you accidentally break your camera or even if it gets stolen and you accompany that w/ a police report, that it is covered under the plan. Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks.

My advice is avoid the U20 and get a nikon 2500 or canon s200. it's worth the little extra for the difference in user reviews.

The only way to save this thread is to post somethihg that is very relevant:

So far it was a rule of thumb that extended warranties are for suckers.

?? Are extended warranties not for suckers ??

They say that if it's going to break, it's going to break while it's under regular warranty.
Please post why this isn't so any more.

Well, I need something TINY, and I believe this is the tiniest out there. I looked at the Casio sipix's and I still think this is smaller.

I wouldn't get a extended warranty plan at a retail store. I'd definitely do it at a place that does extended warranties exclusively. Viking has a pretty good reputation.

Viking may be good, but their contract does not cover theft or loss. According to the O.P. CompUSA plans do cover theft and loss (assuming he's right).

Buy with amex blue. It will double the factory warranty. and it's free.

I had a year and a half old Gameboy advance die. I just called them and they sent me a check for the full price I paid for it. I did not even have to send it in.

well, as it goes, credit cards actually have protection. i have a mastercard, so i looked it up. they cover theft for a little bit, like 90 days. and they double the warranty on the camera. for extended, i'm not sure how it works, but for regular, like, instead of 1 year it's 2. and obviously when you buy with a credit card it's free.
but anyway, relevant to a good deal for the u20, you can get 20% off at goodguys online. um, that works out to be a lot cheaper, cause online you pay no tax and shipping. sorry, i can't post the coupon code, but you know where to find it.
as for a small camera, sony has actually come out with an even smaller one. you wouldn't believe the dimensions. nor the price. look it up. it's called the qualia (i'm just saying this for kicks. it'd be unrealistic for you to buy one).
and let me give you so info for the compusa extended service plan. cause i just bought one myself. so, it's a one-time deal, cause you only get 1 replacement.
technology assurance plan exclusions: cosmetic damages-they don't take care of these.
"The Plane applies only to the operation or use of the covered product under conditions for which it was designed, and does not cover loss or damage resulting from external causes such as dropping the product, collision with an object, burglary, theft, vandlism, environmental conditions, fire, flooding, corrosion, sand, dirt, windstorm, hail, earthquake, or damage from exposure to weather conditions, misuse, abuse, neglect or accidental damage or damage resulting from improper use of any electrical power source."
hope that helps

I have had the compusa extended warranty replacement plan on my Ipaqs, I smashed one, upgraded, didn't like another one, and upgraded. They are great no questions asked was able to get in on whatever was the current PDA deal, free CF card, Case etc..

I think Homer Simpson said it best with something along the lines of, "Extended warranty!! How could I lose?" and "Extended warranty! I'd be a fool not to!"

Someone has yet to post one reason for buying extended warranty for a $199 item.

Ok, i'll bite. Rca portable DVD. Clearance Target buy. 90 days parts and labor for original warranty. American Express doubles that to 180 days. (DUH! for you Simpson fans.) Enter Viking. 48 months for $60. I will even do the math, that's $15 bucks a year. Conclusion: Extended warranties make sense when you are insuring something likely to break, expensive or impossible to fix, and with a short manufacturer warranty. Sometimes they make sense, other times they are not cost efficient. Depends on the situation. Consumer advocates that generalize about extended warranties always being a "rip-off"do not consider the important variables because they are not aware of them.

For this camera, or in general? If you mean in general, pass me what you're smoking! Sam's Club, Sears, Office Depot all offer service plans (Best Buy doesn't sell extended services - they're *service plans* the add or go above the existing warranty).

Case in point - I bought a $50 DVD player at Sears.

Extended warranty for 2 years at Sears = $7.
Extended warranty for 3 years at Sam's Club = $13
Service Plan for 3 years at Best Buy = $39.99 (for a $50 player!)

I've had the same experience with printers. I bought a $99 printer:

Extended warranty at Sam's Club = $13
Extended warranty at Office Depot = Around $13 IIRC
Service Plan for 3 years at Best Buy = $39.99

Cheaper???

extended warranties give the camera a better resale value. i got an extended warranty when i bought my little sister's camera. i did this because i know she won't be extra careful with it. also check the sony warranty. some of them only have 90 days for labor and 1 year for parts. another thing on how you should decide on getting an ext warranty is take a look at the camera closely. does it have a flimsy battery door or does it look like it can break easily? best warranties are the ones where you can go to the store to drop off the defective equipment instead of mailing it in and the ones with the most bang for your buck. I only buy extended warranties for cameras since they are expensive and also because I own two sony digicams with crappy manufacturers warranty.

Buy the extended replacement at Staples. There is technically a loophole because you don't actually return the old product to get your money back....its quite amazing but they take your word for it.

People come in all the time from COMPUSA, Best Buy, etc....to buy the staples warranties....i know everyone is cheating the system, but apparently they make money anyways. Its funny, because people will buy 2 $300 palms, tell the warranty company its broken, and they come back with like 600 bucks in gift cars to use...

Hehe. Every time I buy a major hot deal item at a particular Staples (like the NEC 1700V) this one manager always wants to sell me the Staples extended warranty. He gives me the same schpeel(sp?). Says to call the warranty company in the second year and they will send me a Staples GC, no questions asked. He said everyone forgets aout the extended warranty so they hardly ever have to pay out so they accumulate big bucks.

that sounds like a policy that is ripe for abuse. i find it a little hard to believe frankly. so, basically - when you want a new item you throw your old one in the trash can and get a new one because you lost it? that's quite a deal indeed...
