I am running a Q6600 at 3Ghz, 3GB of RAM, using Windows Vista Home Premium 32bit and im using SUPER. But I am concerned that SUPER is taking advantage of all the cores in my Q6600 and/or its performance is suffering under Vista. Anyony have any comments or advice it would be greatly appreciated it.

VLC, besides playing media files, can also convert them to a few formats....it's not as versatile as SUPER though. MediaCoder, on the other hand, is a full-fledged transcoder program. also happens to be open source and free.

Just start up the Performance monitor / Resource Monitor program in Vista and it'll graphically show you the CPU load for each core independently!

It'll also show you network and disk load too.

Do this:

http://www.computerperformance...a_resource_monitor.htm

Personally I just made a desktop shortcut to target:
perfmon /res

and click on it when I want to see what's going on.

If you don't get at least 60%+ sustained load on every core, it's probably not doing a great job at taking advantage of your hardware... though I suppose for really simple encodes it could be limited by your disk or memory speed....

I know you don't like Adobe Premiere Pro for encoding movie but I like some of Premiere features...I had 500Mb video it takes 1 hour to encode with dual core cpu.

Third for TMPGEnc, i've used it since beta days. I'll check out MediaCoder though.

I've used SUPER for awhile too, love it for those stubborn formats.

I just use autoGK because I like XviD and vdub is pretty zippy for me.

Check out Handbrake. I got that hint from someone on this site. I use to convert files/movies to MP4 to play on my PS3 etc. Anyhow if you want that Q6600 to have all four core maxed and running 60+c use that app...

OK I have checked out **every** suggestion in this thread, and so far it seems mediacoder is by far the winner. TMPGenc seems great, if only it supported some decent formats ... too bad it doesn't. same deal with handbrake. super is slow as crap.

mediacoder is very fast and supports just about every format, but I have run into a few random glitches, files randomly decide they don't want to get transcoded, and one time a transcode finished but the sound was all glitchy. I don't know if I should blame this on the x64 version that I am trying out, plus, I'm not convinced it's truely x64 because vista task manager lists some of the heavy CPU usage plugins with a *32 .

So far, though... I really don't see a better program than mediacoder, unless you have some very specific authoring to do in which case tmpgenc should be good......

Are you sure you grabbed the right version of TMPGenc?

TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress encoder is now twice as powerful as before. Offering the most common file formats including HDV import/output along with DivX 6 AVI, MPEG-1/2/4, QuickTime (MOV), Windows Media (WMV/WMV-HD/WMA) input/output, and now with Flash Video (FLV1, FLV4) input!

xvid? h.264 input?

in any case, it doesn't matter... IMHO, a software that is expensive like that should have AT LEAST as much support as the Opensource freeware out there.
