Hello everyone, and Happy Holidays.

I'm in the market for the best overall eSata external HDD enclosure to use with 1tb HDD's (built-in cooling capabilities a plus)

Thanks in advance for the feedback, and take care.

T.S.

I agree that the MX-1 is a good choice for totally enclosed with good cooling.

However I really like the docking station concept like the Thermaltake unit.

I have a ThermalTake Max4 it works ok but for some reason it doe not like my front esata port on 2 of my computers even though the ports work on other esata drive I have but works fine with the rear esata ports on the motherboard and their support is useless....

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817173043 I have this and no complaints so far. I only got this when it had a $20 rebate.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16817153071 I use this the most tho. Only because I have multiple external drives.

Thanks for those links, and opinion! Too funny, because just today I saw that the Thermaltake is being advertised on amazon for $40, with a $15MIR bringing it to $25 shipped!

Yep, the BlacX had a $20 rebate several weeks ago. All of the above enclosures go on sale/have rebates often enough to wait for one to buy if you don't need it immediately.

The BlacX is probably one of the best purchases I've ever made. As previously mentioned it is ridiculously convenient.

Thanks again.

I'm now venturing into storing media on HDD vs discs, and this enclosure hopefully will work well. I'm just nervous about using strictly HDD in the event they crash, and I lose TB's of data that would cost me so much to replace. . . I guess it's just a crapshoot. I'm hoping the Caviar Green 1TB works out. . .

Thanks again.

Your needs sound similar to mine. I do a lot of video editing so I back up everything on external drives. I keep 2 backups, on 2 separate external drives. Yeah, that means buying an extra drive and making another backup, but the odds of 1 backup dying (while still small) is a lot higher than both backups being lost.

I used to store my external media by burning them onto DVD's. This worked out OK to start but it quickly got out of hand. It takes a lot longer, I have tons of DVD's to keep track of, and I trust my data more on a good external drive as opposed to 100's of DVDs. This isn't a viable option for me anymore.

For those using the BlacX, how do your store your HD's when they aren't being used? I'm afraid that just having them lying around will damage them eventually. Is there some sort of static-free bag or case you could buy?

I just put them in the anti-static bag they came with (I save everything) and keep them in a drawer, nothing fancy. The bottom of the drawer is lined with that foamy cushion layer that comes with certain computer/electrical items like motherboards.

I've been using the MX-1 for a month now, with a Seagate 500gb 32mb cache drive I get 70-80mb/sec over eSata.

When you said "this isn't a viable option for me anymore", were you referring to storing the data on DVD's?

Thanks for asking that, you read my mind. My initial thoughts were how would I properly store the HD's when not in use?! Also, in addition to the anti-static bag, I'm assuming a cool/dry environment would be ideal.

Yes, no more backing up to DVD's for me. Only external hard drives now.
