I have a golden and would highly recommend either. You'd be hard pressed to find a friendlier, more gentle dog than a golden retreiver.

Sorry didn't read this far when I responded. Oh so you have seen first hand what one pitbull did to another dog. Well why didn't you say so.....

Here you go short and to the point

1. Bitten by a pit bull as a child by one that came into the street after getting loose.

2. neighbor bitten by one

3. Our spaniel mauled by neighbors dog and nearly killed

4. Another neighbors beagle mauled by same dog, they had to choke the pit bull to get him to release the beagle.

Oh this is EASIER than I thought.....

1. Dog, loose. Bad owner. No ifs, ands, or buts. Bad owner. And you expect the dog was raised properly? Once again, not the dogs fault.

2. Let me guess, pretty much same as one......

3. I think I explained dog aggressiveness. Common in pitbulls and other dogs. Want to ban the other breeds too?

4. Once again, same things.

You have shown NOTHING but bad owners who had powerful dogs. I won't argue that pitbulls aren't powerful and that they aren't dog aggressive.

HOW ABOUT SOME REAL DATA...

"The concern over vicious dogs and new legislation aimed at certain breeds should cause us to wonder what is the propensity of different breeds to be vicious?

The American Temperament Test Society has a standardized test aimed at determining the temperament of any breed of dog. They have been testing dogs since 1977. 25,655 dogs were tested between December 2003 and December 2005. If a dog passes the test it?s given a ?TT? designation.

An average of 81.2% of all dogs have passed this test. How do the different breeds compare? You might be surprised!

SCORED AVERAGE OR ABOVE:

American Pit Bull Terrier: 83.5%

American Staffordshire Terrier: 83.3%

American Bulldog: 82.3%

Cocker Spaniel: 81.7%

German Shepherd: 83.1%

Golden Retriever: 83.7%

Rottweiler: 82.5%

Staffordshire Bull Terrier: 84.7%

Standard Poodle: 85.8%

SCORED WORSE THAN AVERAGE:

Afghan: 72%

Beagle: 79.7%

Bloodhound: 71.9%

Border Collie: 79.7%

Collie: 79%

Neapolitan Mastiff: 54.5%

Old English Sheepdog: 77.8%

Shetland Sheepdog (Shelty): 66.9%

Welsh Pembroke Corgi: 78%

Awesome dogs! I have two (same accident two years in a row.) Mom was 130 lb Brindle Bull Mastiff, Dad was a (mostly) Lab farm dog from next door.

The lazy protective Bull Mastiff balances out the hyper friendly Lab very nicely IMO.

Samson
He's 120 lbs and lean like a Dane mix.
Logan
She's about 90 lbs, and short/stocky... more Bully

Might be a bit large for the OP though

That was not the case on these dogs that attacked me and the neighbor. That were not bad owners. They were known in the neighborhood. I am sure your two are great animals. I know that an animal can be a reflection of its owner. There was something else going on here. As I said earlier too, they had pry the pit off of the beagle. You need someone very responsible town such an animal.

Unfortunately, I know these types of dogs do attract people who want to make them aggressive.

You are in effect giving a these people a weapon.

NOT EVERYONE should be allowed to own a pit bull. It might not be a bad idea to even consider permits for them to weed out the people who chain them in their yard and beat them ect..

Golden Retriever. The dog I grew up with. It was my pops (she died when I was very young). His parents had one with a litter...so it was the only dog I knew at the time.

Sister-in-law has a golden-cockerspaniel mix. cool-ass dog. bigger than a sh1t dog, but smaller than the medium-sized dogs. Huge ass though. Pays no attention to their 10-month old son (jealousy issues).

I think a boxer would be good too. My cousins had one before it got hit by a car. Before that, the youngest (she was 1-7 those years) would go everywhere with that dog. walking to our grandparents house, the dog would spot a snake, and push her away. He'd actually jump in front of her and shove his weight into her. I've never known a dog to do that.

This thread makes me want to cry...

Medium is 40-60 lbs, 15 is super small!

Super Small is 1-2 lbs. My friend has a 2lb Chihuhaha.

my friends have a 6 year-old chihuhaha. only one I've ever liked--it doesn't make a sound, an djust chills...all day long. The only time it gets hyper is when it gets a spoonful of guacamole and begs for wine. one kick-ass dog. It can actually smile, too. No sh1t.

Another picture of an Alaskan Klee Kai. Good medium size dogs.

that's a beautiful dog. I've always wanted a Husky, but I hear they can be tempramental and have certain health issues (don't remember specifics). I'm guessing hip-displacement is one of them--pure breds at least...

well, I'd never get a pure bred anyway.

I agree and can't wait to get one myself. And little dogs are annoying and should all be killed. People who dress them up should meet the same fate.

I would like to say again, my dogs are not pits. My dogs are mutts, I just happen to know their lineage. Lucy is an american bulldog/Boston Terrier mix. Dozer is an english bulldog/American Bulldog mix. Both are mistaken for pits on a regular basis. So anyone wanting to ban pits are going to ban my dogs......

Do you believe in banning dobermans? You are so shortsighted. If you make it hard to own pitbulls or require a license. One of two thing will happen.

People will ignore it and we will still get pitbulls that are aggressive because of idiots.

Or

People will move on to other breeds and you will see the EXACTLY same thing happen.

It happened in the 70's. No one really heard about pitbull attacks before the 70's. Wow, I wonder why that is. Responsible breeders and owners were the only people that had them. What did we hear about in the 70's in regards to dog attacks. It was dobermans and rottweilers attacked and killed people. They were the dog that was a fad. People wanted "tough" dogs and they got those two types.

It just happens in the 80's people found out that pitbulls were the kings of the dog fighting pit. So everyone who wanted a "tough" dog started buying them. Attacks started to happen. On top of that breeders couldn't keep up with the demand so they started breeding dogs that had NO business being bred. Dogs that did not show the proper temperament.

Everything wrong with pitbulls today is MAN's fault. Piss poor owners and piss poor breeders.

If you want to ban pitbulls, it will just happen to the next dog.

And to ramble on some more. Do you even know where pitbulls came from? They came from English Staffordshire Terriers. Do you know anything about Staffies in england? They are called the NANNY DOGS. Why are they called the Nanny dogs? Because they are exceptional with children and will give their life to protect a child.

Guess what? An english staffordshire terrier is just as dog aggressive in general as a pitbull but they are GREAT human companion dogs.

So in the end, if you want to blame anything, blame the human in the situation.

I would ask if you were honestly so stupid that you can't figure this out, but you have managed to cock up the quoting system almost a half-dozen times in this thread alone, despite the presence of a dedicated "Quote" button, so here goes:

Humanity as a whole would be better off if you were not conceived.

Thank you.

Mercenary, I usually don't get into long conversations where I would need to quote.

This was something I felt strongly about and now the whole thing is looking like a big thread crap.

I will work on my quoting in the future to keep things readable for other forum members.

I really don't give a damn what you think personally.

Yellow Lab for the most mellow of temperament and as all Labs are, absolutely loyal, protective, and loves kids.

Chocolate Lab if you want a little more spirited dog, but still absolutely loyal and very kid/family friendly. Mine loves to play with the cat. They have been playing together since the cat was a tiny kitten.

Black lab if you want a very loyal dog, who is also a fantastic hunter/retriever.

or you can do as I did, and get all three. LOL

With apologies to your wife, I'd suggest one of these:
standard poodle, lab, or golden retriever.

If I knew what my smallest dog was, (she's a mix), and if her personality was normal, I'd recommend her over any other dog, with reservations only due to her jumping ability. (8 foot stockade fencing is *not* a barrier to her)

Golden retrievers are one of the most forgiving dogs out there... kids can pull their hair, climb all over them, and they won't nip or growl at the kids (at least, I've never heard of a case.) They are incredibly tolerant. On the other hand, golden retrievers are puppies (regardless of their physical size) for at least 2 years. That's not necessarily a bad thing; in many cases, it's a good thing. But, a larger dog behaving like a puppy can be a handful at times.

I saw someone the other day with a miniature Border Collie. I know this is a recognized breed but I would research it. If you can get even half the personality and intelligence of a border collie in a smaller size then that would be the perfect dog for you. Also very protective. My friend's border collies "herd" their 2 kids whenever they sense danger.

Why don't you think the Havanese would be a good choice? My sister has a male and he seems to be very active when he needs to be, but can be a lapdog too...
