want a combo b/n performance and loudness
I intend on overclocking...
i read the anandtech article but i couldnt find the orix fan it suggested as the best performance/sound ratio
planning on using xp2200+
is a lower dB a louder sound or a lower sound (sorry if thats a really dumb question)
should i make it suck or blow?? antec performance plus 1080 and MSI KT3 Ultra ARU (MS6380E)...

ty for puttin up with my idiocy

There is no right answer to what fan is best sorry... The higher the dB the louder the noise except, the bigger the fan usually the lower the pitch. this is good. If you want silent running the Panaflo L1A is a good choice. performance with out caring about noise look for the Deltas and or 50CFM sunon. the Fan should be set to suck by design but, if your case has a good breeze it just might be better to blow. this means you have to play with it a bit.

the nice thing the HS is sooo big it almost does not need a fan.

I hope that helps some

I just ordered an AX-7 with This Fan. It has a built-in rheostat, and can move anywhere from 0 to 48cfm of air (cubic feet per minute) The dB level is directly proportional to the airflow level; EG- at lower airflow, the noise is lower, at higher airflow, the noise is louder. So with this fan, you can turn it to low at night or when you want it quiet, and turn it to high when you're gaming or doing other strenuous CPU activities.

As for the question about fan orientation, Alpha recommends that the fan is set to suck air away from the heatsink. However, in my testing I have found that it is better to blow air into the heatsink. The difference was very small, however; 2 C at best. It would be best if you experimented both ways, as the results will be different in each case.

I just used one of the cheap $3 fans from Bestbyte.net; it keeps my XP1500(1.33GHz) doing 1800(1.53GHz). It's this one - 41CFM, 34dBA. Not bad at all, especially for the price.

i'm using the panaflos (21dba). temps are consistent on my 2100+. They range around 49-52 deg. Case Fans do play a factor of about 2-3deg. I have the rheobus, so i only crank it full (4 fans) when i'm playing games.

I have four of those 41CFM's that Jeff talked about from Bestbyte.net in an antec case. not too loud course I have them on a rheobus.

You may want to check this out:

Thread

You may want to look into getting a variable speed fan where you can set rpm's.

I am also trying to figure out which fan I should use for my new 8045. I was actually considering getting a larger fan (92mm maybe) with one of those adaptor/duct thingies. I know that a larger fan can move the same amount of air with less RPMs, thereby making less noise. However, would the turbulence created by forcing that air through a duct make enough noise to cancel out the benefit?

If your goal is quietness at/near stock clock speed, a quiet 80mm fan like a Panaflo L1A should get the job done on an 8045, considering that an L1A moves more air than a stock AMD fan does (and the heatsink is obviously better too). The M1A 80mm fan could be worth a look if you want to crank up the cooling (32cfm at 28dB).

A 92mm Panaflo L1A, for comparison, is rated for 42cfm and 27dB, but from what I've read around here, the fan adaptor/heatsink apparently restricts the airflow enough to negate most of the theoretical advantage. I've also found that a fan's noise level picks up when its flow is restricted, which you can confirm by holding a running fan in open air, then putting it against a surface with holes in it. You might want to start a thread requesting feedback on fan adaptors and see what peoples' experiences have been.

A computer will only be as quiet as its loudest part, so keep an ear on the other sources of noise too, such as the hard drive, video-card fan and motherboard-chipset fan if so equipped.

Thanks for your help. I am trying to find out about cooling because I am building a new computer for college. I want to overclock it as much as possible without making enough noise for my roommate to go insane and throw it out the window... that would be a "VERY BAD THING"(TM). I personally don't care about noise, but he seems to want to do something called "sleep". By the way, could somebody tell me what that is? : )

"Sleep" is what happens when you run out of coffee and/or homework.
