Only question I have about that is will one CD key work over lan on 2 comps?

Also about the C&C series, excluding Generals (the only one I've played) which one is the best?

I guess you can say Im into games where defense is a key, not so much mad rushes to a city in which to raid (thats why I like AoE2) I like building walls at chokepoints and having to siege castles to get through, and having to fight over resources like gold mines in AoE2. Are the old C&C games like this?

i dont think cdkeys are checked unless you connect to the server.

For starcraft, you can do multiplayer spawn. For AOE2, they don't check.

Age of Empires II was just plain fun. Other ones I liked are Starcraft, Empire Earth (there are something like 10 or 12 ages in the game).

I'm currently playing Empires: Dawn of the Modern World and I like it a lot. It's a bit different in that you research troop upgrades independently and then decide when and on which troop type to assign the upgrade (each troop type can only have 1 upgrade) so a big part of your strategy is to determine WHEN to give out the upgrades after you research them. Do you want to give that +3 range to your archers now or wait until the next age when you get musketeers? Do you give your swordsmen more armor, hit points, or a damage bonus?
Also there are "special abilities" that you can research - e.g. an "embargo" (which can last 60 seconds) will prevent all oppenents from temporarilly building any replacement troops. Chain a couple of these together while you launch a major attack can cause lots of havoc.

Empire Earth was the most expansive rts and most innovative when it came out (before AoM, Rise of Nations). It does expand into the future with nanotech and the like, but you can limit yourself to the earlier ages if you want. I'd say if you wanna stick in the dark ages I'd go AoE 2 with the conquerors expansion as it is pretty much the best, although it will look kinda old now. I wouldnt go all the way back to Warcraft2 the interface is so limited, even starcraft was lightyears ahead (not just in gameplay). The other problem with Warcraft2 is the rock/paper/scissors everything has a counter thing wasnt really introduced yet. So it's just rock v rock and you all have identical units pretty much. War3 is much better with more variety, though many are annoyed by the unit limits. There are a lot of new RTS games that are really horrible such as the lotr one and another one that basically tried to copy Warcraft3. Stick to ones mentioned in these posts. The other thing you could do is check pcgamer to see if they have reviewed it. If a game is bad they will definitely tell you. Not only that they rate the games on genre not on an overall scale.

Oh yeah AoM's best feature is the myth units not necessarily the god powers.

Starcraft has superior gameplay, but I prefer warcraft 3 because it's much easier to find a decent game. I got so sick of all the idiotic "HUNTERZ W/ MUCHO MONEY" maps and people who quit in the first 2 minutes on Starcraft to drive me away from the game. Starcraft is only good if you have a large pool of friends to play with all the time. Warcraft 3 on the other hand makes it very easy to find a balanced opponent and play a good game.

Starcraft and Total Annihilation were the peak of the RTS genre. Ever since then, all RTS games have been weird mixes of other genres, like rpg games with levels or war sims with massive time lines or first person unit control / etc.

I'd love to see another starcraft. Same view point but 3d units and awesome AI.
