I like that the Bitdefender is $10 cheaper than Symantec Norton Internet Security 2014 - 3 PCs Download but don't know much about them. I want to protect my families PCs from hackers mostly, but do not know which to buy. I got Malware bytes installed but want to back it up with something that has a good firewall and AV. Is there better ones?

Bitdefender makes solid products. It's the only product I recommend to protect corporate virtual environments, so that makes it good enough for my desktop.

Does it have a good firewall? Thanks for the response. I still am unsure of what to get.

Signature based file scanning is an obsolete technology. Don't even bother.

I agree, but out of those two it'd be FitBefriender. At work we are using the client endpoint security of BD and it is very slick. Setting up relays for updates is simple and you get a real-time readout of infections and who's downloading midget porn and getting their system infected.

I need to know the best firewall software(preferably free but will pay if it is not).
Thanks

I've used Comodo Firewall and it's pretty good. I also like the ARP cache protection which is good for laptops using WIFI to prevent man in the middle attacks.

If you have a router the SPI (Stateful Packet Inspection) that is inherit to routers will be good enough though. Unless you want more advanced protection and outbound traffic rules.

For malware protection consider Sandboxie. This will run your web browser in a sandbox so that malware won't even touch your computer. Configure Sandboxie to automatically delete contents on exit, allow access to bookmarks and the profile (at reduced protection but less cumbersomeness) and your good. Sandboxie has a forum so check them out.

Wouldn't firewall choice be based on what you are doing?

For the family, the router and the Windows firewall seem ok with me. I use DoNotTrackMe on the browsers, mainly because it not intrusive and at least seems to be helping. I used AdBlock for the ads. I know it allows a few through, but it's got to support itself somewhere, and I'm ok with that. I have never seen it allow one that leads to malware.

I have tried Sandboxie, and it is just too much of a pain for me, and I know the rest of the family would just avoid it anyway.

I am all about being safe (we haven't had a virus in the house in forever) I just don't see the point of going crazy with it.

If you don't mind paying Bitdefender is probably the best in terms of security vs hands off approach.

If you are an advanced and/or power user and want the best firewall than I recommend Comodo firewall which is free. Be prepared to get a lot of notifications though and to set up a lot of programs and connections yourself.

Noisy firewalls tend to be shut off.

If you really need a FW solution get something that you can set up the rules.

Many that think they want/need a FW really don't.

Sandboxie is the best tool i find for this purpose.

Uh, Sandboxie isn't a firewall and if your having trouble with Sandboxie you never configured it right.

Bitdefender is great, if you have the money go for it. If you absolutely want free, then comodo IS is the only suite that has firewall and AV.

Else a combination of online armor free and say Avast free AV would be decent.
