Best firmware to improve WRT54GS reliability?

I'm having problems with the WRT54GS I put in at my parent's place. My WRT54GS was rock solid, but this one drops connections 2 to 4 times a day for about 5 minutes at a time, then gets itself back online. Also, I'd like to improve the range a bit. I've been looking at various firmwares and I want some recommendations based on actual experience. Basically, I want:

1. Improved reliability
2. Increased range

Hyper-WRT, Sveasoft, etc...what would you recommend?

Bricked my WRT54GS v1.2, "Update are failed" Just ran to Staples and blew $75 on a new one, but it's a v.5 which looks like a mess to update.

Kaido, *don't panic*. I've thought I've bricked a WRT lots of times. No perma-bricks yet.

Try the boot_wait TFTP rescue instructions. Just try it. Also try running Ethereal on your PC while it powers up to see what if anything it is doing on the network. Chances are quite good that you can get yourself back to a working state.

Your bricked WRRT54g is still better than a v5.

It is Not as Macho as the DD-WRT, but if it does what you need, it works better.

Thanks guys, I'll give it a shot. I've bricked a WRT54GS before and been through all of the extensive testing procedures, so I'm not holding my breath for this one. Didn't get any pings on multiple reboots. I'll try more extensive testing tomorrow. I *think* I used the wrong initial firmware for the Linksys; instead of using the generic mini I used the Linksys mini. At least that's what I think happened. Wish me luck

spidey, I'm assuming he means it worth as much as a brick. Hopefully he can recover it. I sure wish they wouldn't have changed them so you can't flash them.

Basically it means there is no recovery at all, it's become a useless "brick", a paperweight. When I was flashing my last WRT54GS I lost power in the middle of a firmware upgrade, which totally borked it. I went through every recovery procedure known to man and it still wouldn't come back to life, so now my Xbox is enjoying one of it's old antennas lol.
