My doctor's been closed since covid started. My doctor's the higi health station at wegmans. Last time I used it, everything looked good aside from being a bit heavier than I'd like. I'd get borderline high readings if I went in with snus in my mouth. If not, everything was fine.

Until just recently I was the same... essentially while my business is STILL 90% shut down I have terrific full-coverage health insurance so I'm trying to get on top of the situation while I can afford to do so.

Soon as I go back in full-time I'll be back to garbage health-coverage.

My doctor wanted me to take Lipitor when my cholesterol went over the tolerable limit a few years ago, IIRC a little over 240

Mine is 210 (overall) and my doc wants me to start taking Lipitor too by sheer coincidence ... I'm not excited about it.

I'm taking a couple meds now which to be fair are noticeably making me feel better, but I'm hesitant on the statin itself AND on taking too many different medications in general.

You can very likely bring down your cholesterol and blood pressure with a combination of food decisions and exercise. I figure that's way way better than taking meds. I don't take anything! Well, I take daily supplements (an adult multivitamin, C, E, a baby aspirin, an antihistamine, glucosamine and a probiotic), but those aren't meds and AFAIK, there's no "side effects."

Fortunately my local Chinese place has a great "steamed/healthy" selection! (eating shrimp and broccoli now)

And totally agreed ... working out regularly will cancel out MANY sins!

I take crestor for my cholesterol control. It is considered mandatory if you have heart surgery here. My numbers are very low now.

I had my mom switched to Crestor years ago specifically because she loved grapefruit and AFAIK it's the only statin which allowed her to still eat them.

I did a ton of reading about statins years ago ... wish I could recall more details!

Are they really strong though? Every once in awhile I see a flaming hot, ZOMG mega heat super snack, buy it, and wonder where the peppers are. After eating a whole bag, I think "I think I feel my lips tingle a little bit", my fingers are covered in red crap, and I realize I just got screwed out of $1.50.
They are pretty spicy for commercial stuff. Spicy in a "my mouth hurts a bit I better eat some more to make it go" way, then the bag dirt of disappears!
I had some "artisanal" crisps once which were basically crisps with powdered Naga chillies and salt on. Ive never been pepper sprayed but I'd imagine it's similar. There was snot and tears!

Why not? People ate it out of necessity because they had nothing else to eat. Probably saved lot of people from starving to death. I grew up poor and it was one of the few snacks we could afford.
I'm not a fan of eating stuff because historically it was a food of subsistence. I'm fine if it actually tastes good (like faggots) but not if it doesn't (like andouillette).

"I've never met a potato I didn't like." - My recently deceased cousin, quoted during a Zoom tribute that must have had over 100 participants

Funny thing is that while I really like potatoes every time I eat a lot of them for more then one meal I start to feel kind of crappy. Boiled, fried, baked makes very little difference.

Potatoes are very starchy, that is if I can believe what my mother always said. I try not to eat a whole lot of them.

Stop bumping this thread, we already know what the answer is and if your answer is not Cape Cod Sea Salt & Vinegar then your answer is wrong, you are wrong, your parents failed you.

LOL, best chip? That isn't even the best flavor of Cape Cod.

Sweet & Spicy Jalapeño Cape Cod is the superior flavor.

I'm pretty adventurous when it comes to food. We're all shaped by our experiences. There are some food stuff I don't like but because of my background and culture, I think I have less prejudice when it comes to food than a person who grew up eating regular Western diet of meat and potatoes.

Apparently they are also a relative of Nightshade and contain small amounts of certain nerve-toxins. What I find is that potatoes seem to aggravate the neuropathic pain I get in my feet.

Aside from that your mom was correct ... while they will serve to keep you alive in a pinch, they are not all that healthy.

Unfortunately I have a fairly bad lactose allergy so I have to avoid most dairy-stuff but aside from INHERENTLY DISGUSTING "foods" like pigs/cows brain, Rocky mountain "oysters" or Durian for example(s) I'll try nearly anything.

My dad was the primary reason for this ... when I was a little kid he used to take me out to dinner in NYC about once a month and we always tried something different/new. (he also taught me how to cook a lot of it myself too)

Ask your doctor about "side effects" you seem to be blissfully unaware of; particularly chronic aspirin and antihistamine use.

Prepare for a surprise.

Me to! I live in about as Midwest place as you can get and the food around here is so bland and uninspired. Sure there are your outliers but for the most part its pretty much meat and potatoes around here. And NO ONE around here has any tolerance for a even a hint of heat in their food.

When ever I get the chance to I love trying new foods from different cultures and I would never shy away from trying something different. Even if it's a cup of silkworms I don't give a fuck...I'll at least try it and if it taste good awesome if not at least I can say "Yeah I tried them once. Wasn't my thing though." but my take on it is you have to try it at least once.

So many people just look at certain types of food and instantly say no which is just crazy to me. Taste is like 99% smell how can you LOOK at something and say no to it?? Our eyes have nothing to do with it.

OK, will do. I've run that stuff by him before, don't recall any admonitions. I don't have severe allergies but just what seems to be extremely common allergies, everybody seems to be allergic to pollens. The baby aspirin??? Eh. I can probably find out as much online as asking him, but I will ask. IIRC, studies have shown benefits, I don't recall much in the way of detrimental effects.

Doctor is OK with my supplementation, but agrees about the aspirin:

"Please defer the baby aspirin. It has minimal to no benefit at this time. "

Antihistamines are also considered "medication" by every MD I've discussed them with and they're not great for you.

Be a lot healthier controlling allergies with a steroid nasal spray like Nasonex or Flonase.

Hey, thanks... I'll look into that. I haven't been deciding that based on any symptoms or anything, I've just taken an antihistamine probably 65% of days for the last 10 years. Most of the time I'm fine. This morning for some unknown reason I started sneezing like crazy for 5-10 minutes. Could have been an allergy. I don't know what else to think. Maybe I'll just stop taking AH pills and see how I feel. It's not like I feel I have a major problem that needs control.

Both the allergy sprays I mentioned above are also inexpensive and readily available in generic form... however ZERO meds is the best possible goal. (only take what you really NEED) I get better results from Nasonex personally.

Be wary of strong symptoms that crop up right after you stop taking the antihistamine too .... this could happen due to a tolerance of some kind built up from from taking them for years. (even if it was not every day) You may also have issues falling asleep for a bit.
