Best Forum software?

I'm planning to buy forum software. I've been using invision for about a year and I do like it, so I'm thinking of paying for the lifetime license. However, I know that vbulletin is the other choice.

Any input?

There was two recently..

I run PHPBB, can't justify buying forum software.

If I was going to, it wouls be vbulletin, DEFINATELY NOT Fusetalk. <puke>

Phpbb already fixed the security problem. It was fixed rather quickly too.

I used phpBB when I first started my forums, but I've switched to SMF. Much better, in my opinion.

I like SMF, it seems much faster than phpbb and there is also an import script to transfer from phpbb to SMF

vBulletin

It's feature rich like many boards, if not moreso, however it isn't opensource, which makes it less vulnerable. Their support staff is also excellent.

Yep, every now and then it gets exploited, but every software does. The beauty of PHPBB, other than being free, is that it's the defacto free bulletin board standard. It's ACTIVELY developed and constantly improved. Exploits are quickly eliminated and the software keeps getting better. Any other free solution you risk getting abandoned if the developers lose interest.

Best forum software I've ever used IMO.

I use phpbb and it's very simple and easy to use software...

However, I can't really say I know how well it works in a typical "hard hitting" atmosphere because my forums barely get hit

Only time they did was when top gear was really popular and people were wanting to access the files all the time (which I still have up)

Phpbb, I have it implemented inside of postnuke as a module which runs my site (link at bottom) and it works out very nicely. Any exploits are fixed rather quickly and it has a good full feature set.

Just out of curiousity, since I've never tried one of the non-open source php boards, is there some form of binary distribution? How do they keep you from seeing the source code when it's written in a scripting language?
