i agree as well.
try Avira AntiVir first, imo.

There are some others worth testing if you don't like something about Avira's product.
like Kaspersky, f-secure, bitdefender

all of the above.
Just follow this to lose the small annoyances.

:disgust: Isn't it worth the single daily popup for such a great FREE product?

It doesn't bother me that much. And I think the pop up is only when you do an update (every 3 days in my case).

I just use kaspersky's free online scanner if I'm going to run an executable in which I'm not 100% confident in.

Great, that puts your odds at around 60-70%!

Why is that? I'm under the impression the free online scanner uses the same updates as the full paid Kaspersky program? I thought Kaspersky was the best AV software there was. Hmm...

It's one of the best as far as signature/heuristic detection rates go, but if you collect a sample set of fresh malware that's just minutes old, and scan it with Kaspersky's online scanner, you are probably going to get results similar to mine: http://www.antisource.com/arti...ntispyware-comparisons

In the set of 95 samples used there, there were some that none of the antivirus softwares recognized by signatures or heuristics. Behavioral blocking might see something suspicious when the malware was actually doing its thing on your system, but that requires having full-ride Kaspersky (or whatever) actually installed and running its Proactive Defense module.

These days, it's best not to play with executable files that are of questionable origin, no matter what the antivirus scanner says. The bad guys know how to bait a hook...

Antivir's big "problem" is that the free version doesn't scan pop3 mail. Im using Avast because of that.

xp/vista antivirus/antispyware 2008/2009 or some variant of it. they look so pretty.

(For those taking that recommendation seriously, please dont. The programs listed above are rogue products and should never be used, once again, please dont.)

for a more serious recommendation: x5 on Avira Antivir. Solid little program.

It doesn't scan it in transit, but if you try to open an infected attachment, the real-time protection is going to take care of it. Having seen Avast miss a few extremely-common email worm samples in a row (namely Storm), I think I'd rather have AntiVir, even if it doesn't scan POP3 traffic on-the-fly.
