I work nights, and my wife is home with the kids and picks up the mail. I'm generally asleep when it comes, and I never get a single letter that hasn't gone through her first. So yes, it's quite possible he never checked the mail. That, generally speaking, is the way a relationship works.

My wife hasn't paid a bill in 7 years. Not because she can't, but because it's much easier to have a single person handle the finances to avoid confusion. If he was working nights and sleeping through the day, then it's not surprising his wife handled the finances since she was the only one generally awake during business hours.

There are all sorts of ramifications to working an off shift that people never think about until they're forced to actually do it.

My wife gets the mail 99 days out of 100. I pay the bills.

For most of the bills, I also get an email saying it is ready to review. If I ever got an email but did not see the bill a few days later, I would start asking questions.

That being said, she is much more responsible with money than I am, so I have little to worry about.

Good chance this is BS.

Not only does a Notice of Default get posted on your door, but so does a Notice of Sale. And the bank calls you 4X a day. And the NOD gets filed with the county as well. They sell these lists to real estate agents, loan mod guys, mortgage guys. You get bombarded with advertisements saying DONT LOSE YOUR HOUSE! etc.

Your friend is full of it.

Yeah, something sounded really funny about the story. And, you guys nailed it - it would be impossible to not know - the phone would be ringing off the hook.

UPDATE:

Sorry for starting this thread and being away.

I didn't explain things between them enough.

He and his wife were/are still together. AFAIK he didn't have any warning of her not paying the mortgage or her leaving. I asked him what did she do when they showed up to the house to throw them out and he said she just sat in the floor and cried. When asked why she didn't tell him about the mounting bills and them being foreclosed she said she didn't want to upset him cause he was already going through some stuff with his father (different story).

The wife still lived in the house and was still married to friend. No divorce was happening

More of the story is that supposedly the reason she stopped paying was she had told him that they were going to see if they qualified for a mortgage reajustment and started on a program that basically had them paying less than what the previous mortgage was during the trail period. (6 months) After that she said they sent her a notice that they didn't qualify for the mortgage mod and that she owed the difference of the 6 months, about $6K. She told him since she didn't have the money that she just stopped paying and never said a word to him.

^not sure i believe this part but I can tell you this girl is extremely naive.

The whole kicker of the story is my buddy had the $6k to pay and he said that they could've sold the house for 30 - 40k more than they owed if it came down to it. His wife just never told him anything.

If they're not together, why was he getting her to pay the mortgage if she's not living there anymore?

^ I was thinking the same exact thing but they don't have a home phone and her cell is the listed number cause i asked the exact same questions. He told me that he found out that they got two notices posted on the door and that she trashed them. Read update to here about current mortgage mod situation.

The thing that kinda threw me for a loop when i was thinking he was broke and came up with this story was I asked if he needed money and even offered with a few hundred bucks i had in the wallet and he said no. Figured if he was that bad financially he wouldve taken the money since i offered and he didn't solicit.

Also I have been friends with him for over 20 years.

So what happened to the money that should of went to the mortage for those 6 months? Did the wife spend it elsewhere? You'd definitely notice the extra money from NOT paying your mortage for a month, much less 6 consecutive months.

How can people not understand their own finances? How does he not know how much he and his wife make? If they had the money, why would they not pay the morgage? I they didn't have the money, he probably knew in advance. Stupid to the extreme.

Are you sure you're not the stupid one? The OP might be BS'ing us, but otherwise, the story is saying the friend had the money to pay, the wife didn't pay it and because of that, they got evicted.

How quickly was this eviction anyway? I thought the process took forever and a year now.
