I work nights, and my wife is home with the kids and picks up the mail. I'm generally asleep when it comes, and I never get a single letter that hasn't gone through her first. So yes, it's quite possible he never checked the mail. That, generally speaking, is the way a relationship works.
My wife hasn't paid a bill in 7 years. Not because she can't, but because it's much easier to have a single person handle the finances to avoid confusion. If he was working nights and sleeping through the day, then it's not surprising his wife handled the finances since she was the only one generally awake during business hours.
There are all sorts of ramifications to working an off shift that people never think about until they're forced to actually do it.
My wife gets the mail 99 days out of 100. I pay the bills.
For most of the bills, I also get an email saying it is ready to review. If I ever got an email but did not see the bill a few days later, I would start asking questions.
That being said, she is much more responsible with money than I am, so I have little to worry about.
