I hate getting burned with computer parts. I bought 1 gig of some expensive ram for 70 1 month ago and now 2 gigs of the same stuff cost 90.

What is the best future proof video card out there? Also factor in, the pending price drop it will go through. For example, with the pending arrival of R600, the 8800 should drop in price. The question is how much of a drop.

The 8800 ultra should be out in 2 weeks. After seeing some r600 benches I don't think prices will fall to much after the launch of the 8800ultra.

Radeon X39500XTX!!!! OMG just wait till DX15 games come out, then you'll be happy with the ATI card!!!

All joking aside, wait until 8800 Ultra hits, then scour the net for a decent 8800GTX AR deal.

Been burned too, huh.

He likely ain't laughing because he got burned to. Its likely because anyone who deals with PC's and games gets burned . Its life when your into computers. I gave $220 for 2gb of memory back in Dec. Now the same stuff can be had at nearly $100 less. No matter what you buy now the card will be $50-100 less in a few months. Your best bet is to wait till Crysis comes and buy what will run it nicely since its the next big game.

I ain't worried. Now, with DirectX10 for Windows XP almost completed by 3rd parties and Vista dieing a deservedly painful death we'll all have fast, stable XP drivers for years to come.

Also, my rig'll eat Crysis for lunch, know what I'ze be sayin'?

9700 pro was.

It might have been more future-resistant than other cards, but that's also partly because it took a while for more demanding games to come out. Now we have games like R6 Vegas, Oblivion and Stalker that even the 8800gtx doesn't seem like overkill anymore.

you want us to do the math and the projection for you?

OK

first of all [3 or 4 parts]

what resolution and detail-level do you game at [or like to game at] ?

... what is the rest of your rig like ?

and when do you plan to upgrade - your GPU now? - and then upgrade 'again' ?
[how long is your upgrade cycle and do you upgrade everything at the same time]

MOST importantly ... what is your budget ?

FINALLY ... if you answer these questions carefully and honestly, it will be *obvious* to you what to buy ...

8800GTS 320MB definitely is the best bang for the buck card right now...seems to be future proof as well.

Don't worry about future proof; it isn't going to happen. Also don't get high end unless you don't mind throwing money away. Buy what you need, and look for what offers the best bang for the buck.

The NVidia 6200LE is future-proof.

It was already outdated when it came out, it is outdated now, and will remain so for eternity.

lmao on the 6200 LE.

Investment wise only you can say what your risk/reward should be on anything you buy, be it computer parts or art. For instance I bought a original mac a longtime ago and it served me well well after it became obsolete, its now a fishtank ^^

When I buy computer equipment I try to think of how will I be using this in 2-3 years. I usually rebuild once a year and the then obsolete parts get moved into my internet/torrent/word workstation. A good tier 1 or tier 2 card now will serve faithfully into the next 3-5 years as a regular ol' graphics card that will drive your monitor and let you see the internets. The one thing I would ensure the graphics card does have is HDCP so you can at least use it to view HD content for the next couple of years.

If your into gaming its inevitable that newer games like crysis and Hello kitty Online the Burning Brusade are to make sure it has the biggest frame buffer you can afford. I really don't think 320 cards are gonna cut in the next year on 20 inch and above monitors.

I need some help choosing a decent card too.

I've been out of the video card market for a while, so I need some opinions

I'm looking into a midrange card, I don't like the idea of forking 600$ for a card, and so I was looking into an Asus EN7900GS with 256DDR3. It will cost 190?, around 150$.

Is it a good chooice? I want to be able to play C&C3, Stalker, Crysis. The resolution would be the monitor resolution, 1440x900 (wide).

So is there any other graphic card that would bring me a better performance vs price cost?

I have one more question: Windows Vista has DirectX 10, games will start to come out to take advantage of dx10. Now if I have a video card wich is capable of dx9, does it mean I will never see the effects of dx10? Even if I have it on my system? Or will I get the effects, but with a performance hit?

Thanks
