Quake 1 was the first game where I really noticed the great great ambience. The sound for the game fit the levels perfectly (it was done by trent reznor).

And yes, that Civ4 opening title track is pretty damn catchy. Too bad I didn't care of the game.

I like game soundtracks that not only stand well on their own, but truly immerse you in the game:

- Planescape:Torment... one of the most evocative and inspiring soundtracks out there, an inseparable part of the whole experience

- Command & Conquer 1 (incl. Covert Ops)... arguably the most eclectic and fun combat music ever -- classical, jazz, hip-hop, industrial, even some grunge

- American McGee's Alice... perfectly sets the mood and atmosphere of a twisted fantasy horror story

- Unreal 1... great mix of traditional and futuristic elements -- I developed quite a bit of respect for the talents of the MOD/tracker community after hearing it

Civ 4 has some great music, good enough that I don't feel the need to play extra music while I'm playing it. I'm gonna highjack the thread a bit. I read the title and assumed the op meant best music to play while gaming. I've been playing alot of Day of Defeat Source lately and rap wins hand down. Particularly, biggie and tupac. Yes, make all the jokes you want bout it, but there is nothing like sprinting around a corner and cutting up 2 machine gunners with an axis support trooper with biggie or tupac is screaming in the background.
