from some of the replies i have seen so far, i have to wonder how much experience some people have with games
in my mind, Half-Life is the best computer game made to date. few, if any, FPS games can match the story (heck most games of any genre don't have a story comparable to HL), the gfx were great for the time, the multiplay still holds up today-nearly 6 years after release. it launched the modding craze. it reinvented how the FPS single player game was setup. it continues to be the FPS game that all games are compared to. graphics aside it is still a GREAT game and could be released today successfully.
At the time, HL was by far the best computer game ever made. But other games since then have come along and improved on the concept. I first played HL about 2 years ago and I found it to be quite boring. I played CS shortly after that and it was fun. But then I tried Medal of Honor Allied Assault and never went back to CS or HL. MOH was just a better game. Certainly, it owes earlier games a debt of gratitude because it took many of the concepts and improved them. Then BF 1942 came along and added so much variety and strategy to the WW2 FPS genre.
The question asked what the best game is. Not what the best game was at time of release or what the most influential or groundbreaking game was.
My vote goes to Battlefield 1942.
No other game has even come close to the amount of fun I have had playing that game.
I keep trying other games and while fun, none of them seem to measure up to BF 1942.
EDIT: by the way, I find it pretty funny that such a seemingly devoted fan of HL would misspell the lead characters name.
