Damn near impossible to answer...
Doom1 for the single player awesomeness(Cyberdemon kicks all other big bosses asses), and Doom II for the multiplayer goodness.
WarCraft II + Kali = my first internet gaming addiction.
Fallout just all around kicks ass.
Loom is one of the greatest adventure games of all time IMO, though back in the day there were so many of them.
Elite II, still haven't found a worthy substitute.
Chaos Engine, mindless in every possible way, but it was sooo much fun.
Syndicate, no comment needed.
StarCraft, first RTS with a truly great story, and one of the most awesome multiplayer games ever.
The Deja Vu, Uninvited, and Shadow Castle series kicked mucho ass on the old Mac back in the day...

So many to choose from

Metal Gear Solid...sure it was short, but I quite literally didn't do anything productive until I beat the game, that's gotta say something.

Has to be original half life...for breakthrough story, excellent single player and a host of multiplayer offshoots, and great graphics for the times.

I think what got me hooked was the original Kings Quest. At the time I must have been 9 and English wasn't my first language, so my brother and I would sit in front of the computer with a dictionary looking up english words....Good old times...

from some of the replies i have seen so far, i have to wonder how much experience some people have with games

in my mind, Half-Life is the best computer game made to date. few, if any, FPS games can match the story (heck most games of any genre don't have a story comparable to HL), the gfx were great for the time, the multiplay still holds up today-nearly 6 years after release. it launched the modding craze. it reinvented how the FPS single player game was setup. it continues to be the FPS game that all games are compared to. graphics aside it is still a GREAT game and could be released today successfully.

of course FPS games do not make up the entire game market. however i am hard pressed to think of a better overall game i have played or heard of on the computer. (my knowledge of console games is severely lacking). some other notable PC games in my mind:

Civilization 2: great strategy game that may have been surpassed by successors (alpha centauri, Civ 3) however i lack first hand experience with the newer ones. the unlimited replayability of this game combined with the balanced gameplay is only hindered by the lack of multiplay support. of course who wants to play against others when it means waiting possibly 10 for each turn, up to 8 players. being it was released before the multiplayer exploded, this is forgivable.

Warcraft 2: my personal favorite classic RTS. warcraft and C&C basically brought RTS to the mainstream and did it in style. the two were cloned by wanabe's for years until (Blizzard's own) Starcraft came on the scene. even then the genre stayed mostly the same until the recently released Rise of Nations.

Doom: not exactly the adam and eve of FPS games, but you can credit it with the successful birth of the FPS in the mainstream and giving birth to successful multiplay.

diablo series: sure they may not be the greatest RPG's in the classic sense of the phrase, but millions of people can't be wrong when it comes to the pure fun factor of these RPG-lites. even today noone has been able to successfully clone the diablo style of gameplay, and with battle.net support (addmittedly at times being weak) multiplay gave the games nearly infinite life. without all the complex numbers games of more hardcore RPG's these games are just plain fun.

Quake1. There hasn't been a multiplayer experience like it since its creation. The original CTF, Teamfortress, Rocket Arena, Actionquake, etc.

Far Cry in my opinion has provided the most enjoyment. Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow was good but more of the same stuff from the first one. Painkiller was good but it did not compare to Far Cry.

If you like to snipe, you can kick FarCry up a notch after you complete the game by enabling the -DEVMODE. Return to the "Boat" campaign where you blow up the towers, then load up on ammo and cap mercs from the other islands at 600+ meters.

It's not a great game. No real compelling storyline, but the graphics help drive the ratings and the ability to load up with 999 round of ammo for sniping makes it interesting. Don't do this until you have finished the game. It's just more fun and it's another way to go back and raise hell with the AI.

Hey now, no need to slag people for thinking a vapid game that has only one thing going for it is the best ever.
