Quake 2 reallly was the first game that made me start building computers to play video games, so I would go with Quake 2.

EDIT: Hmm... I might have to change my answer to Counter-Strike. From Beta 6 to 1.0 I was totally addicted to that game. No other game since then has been able to top it in terms of sheer playability.

Ultima VII was my first ever RPG, and I'll never forget it. C'mon, you could actually bake your own bread, and sell it for a nice profit. Or find tha magic carpet and explore the entire world. Each new town had a unique atmosphere and set of adventures. Inventory system sucked though, but even new games have that problem.

Diablo II > Baldurs Gate II

Not even the same type of game

Anyway, I'd say Planescape: Torment.

Yeah, you can't even compare the two games. I hate Diablo and all its incarnations, personally. I like story driven much better than combat oriented.

Dig Dug, only game where you use a pump to blow up the baddies. Atari owned the industry, the game is classic on every level. Dig Dug II sucks, and the Dig Dug in the retro re-release, with the bosses and new graphics is kinda interesting. There's nothing like pumping up a Fygar or Pooka and watching them explode.

Battlezone. I keep waiting for someone else to come along and combine the features of resource collection, base building, and unit production/command with a fully FPS perspective (that includes driving and flying vehicles yourself, too).

I spent many hours playing Commander Keen.

Every genre is going to have its own best game though.

StarCraft/Total Annihilation for the RTS genre

Baldur's Gate 2/Fallout/Planescape:Torment for the RPG genre

Half-Life 1 for the FPS genre

SimCity 2000 for the simulation genre

And, of course, you have the classics, Zork, the early Ultima games, the early FF games, etc.

Its a real shame that getting older games to work on a modern PC is getting harder and harder, if not dang near impossible.

My choices, depending on genre are:

FPS - either Duke Nukem 3D or the original Unreal Tournament

Driving - Need for Speed 3/4 and the Colin Mcrae Series although the Richard Burns demo was pretty darn impressive.

Flying - TIE fighter, IL-2

The most fun I've ever had in a video game was in the golden days of Ultima Online. No moronic level grinds or item-based combat. My thief guild terrorized Occlo like no other.

OMG, you can't be serious. I wanted to like that game, but I kept getting thrown off the Vogon ship. Then, a decade or so later, after I found out how to get the babel fish and finally made it to the heart of gold, seems I can't do anything there except get a cup of something that tastes almost entirely unlike tea! So I yet again resigned myself to the idea that the game sucks.

M*U*L*E* is the best of all time.

I excluded UO because MMORPG are so mutable I discounted them from consideration. Plus classic UO doesn't exist any more and people on this forum are sick of me waxing on about the magic of that game.

No way. Diablo II was boooooooooring. Hack, slash, level, repeat? Since there isn't much a story, the only reason to continue playing is to satisfy your own obsessive compulsive needs to gain levels and find items.

My vote goes to Deus Ex.

First of all, this is a dumb thread 'cause it comes up every month or two on every board I've read.

Second, 'best' as in what? Kinda like asking about the best wine, best cheese, best magazine, best car, best sky, best lamp, best air, best electron........

Third, the correct answer is Doom.
