Am I the only one here that doesn't like Ocarina of Time? Ok, it wasn't bad by any means, and most of it was enjoyable. However, I found several parts frustrating, got stuck in several occasions, and I found the ending lackluster and rushed. I still feel that A Link to the Past was the best Zelda title ever released. The world felt "solid", there were tons of secrets to be had, many many dungeons (11 total, a number that seems to decrease with each new Zelda release), and an awesome soundtrack. The ending actually made me cry when I was young.

Agreed. Except for the crying part; that's gay

Dreamcast was one of my favorite systems, if not the favorite...hard to say though... shenmue was a great game.

It appears that FPS and RPG's are amoung the "best", I guess it makes sense because they have either good replay factor and/or a good story behind it. Although for those who don't have the time or patience there are certainly some awesome fighting and airplane shooting games out there.

arcade fighter: Tekken Tag Tournament

arcade shooting: I think it was called "1942" that game is a classic... but theres also gigawing/mars matrix and gunbird.

IMO both are quality games that are on the go.

3rd best game ever IMO, with only Marathon 2: Durandal and Deus Ex beating it. It pwned Doom in every way.

Chrono Trigger, Knights of the Old Republic and FF7 come to mind. When I was a little kid I loved this game for the NES called Crystalis. Not the best game ever but probably the one I enjoyed playing the most.

OMG, that was easily the BEST game for the 2600! Wow, now I wish I could find a port for PC... or a set of paddles that I can use with an emulator.
Come to think of it, I think I'll grab an emulator just to play Combat or something.

Super Mario Bros. 3

StarCraft

Half-Life

And I may take heat for it, but I think Halo was pretty good as well. Maybe not in the same category as the first 3 mentioned, but still a great game.

Anyone old enough to remember the game Dungeon Master (and DM2)?

Those and Ultima 3/4 practically ruined my high school grades...

Then there are the College Unix Labs where various MUDs (Anyone remember GENOCIDE?) and Angband ruined many CS major school careers...

Oh and NetTrek... damn I'm a nerd...

Difficult to pick one game as the best but the games I liked the most... in no particular order
- Doom (first two)
- Quake (first two)
- Deus Ex (first only - second was ****)
- Clive Barker's: Undying
- System Shock 2

I would love to see sequels to SS2, Deus Ex and Undying but that's just wishful thinking.

Wolfenstein/Doom (spawned every shooter you see today)

Total Annihilation (still best RTS made to date)

Tribes (best multiplayer shooter IMO)

Yes!!! My best friend and I stayed up half of Halloween night (not to mention numerous random afternoons) playing that on his Apple IIGS.
As for DM2, sometimes I sill feel a need to poke around in that one from time to time. Thank DOSbox for making that possible!

Another vote for Tribes. Tribes brought us the WASD control configuration, jetpacks, online only FPS (innovative and risky at the time), tons of mods came out for it, vehicles, pre-recorded voice accessible by keyboard shortcuts, team strategy (especially building defenses and repairing defenses, etc etc.

Also, extremely well-balanced character classes.

A LOT of what we take for granted in newer games like Battlefield 2 was innovated by Tribes.
