I went to A&B sound(big store out where i live) and listend to over 20 differnt models ranging from 50$-400$, some i liked for one reason some for others, the koss were the middle ground in my price range so i got them, the sony's were ok but had weak bass and awesome mids, the koss had killer bass and so-so mids. The senn 500 series was great but a little expensive, and sounded a little weak but thats cause i had a weak source, coming out of a stronger source i think the senns would sound alot better. All in all its personal prefrence, go and listen to a bunch and just get the ones you like the most.

I have the Sennheiser 580s also (like them alot), I recommend Grados in the $100 price range. The 60s are easily the best headphones available anywhere in their price range.

If there is a Mars music or other national chain music store in your area go check them out and take a fav CD and listen to all the ones in your price range. Best thing you can ever do, sound is so personal and tastes vary widely so you need to listen to what you are going to buy before you buy them. I got a pair of studio monitor headphones from Mars a while back for $99. Had a requirement that I couldn't get open air (and most of them are) so I needed to see and listen to each pair.

Try the Koss SportaPro's. About $20 at circuit city. You will most likely be surprised by their excellent sound quality. They're very good for cheap headphones. If the bass is too much (which for music it tends to be) then you can get replacement pads (for like $3) at Radio Shack (I can get you the SKU # if interested). With the replacements the highs get a little higher and the bass isn't as boomy.

I own them and am very pleased.

I got a pair of those "Force Feedback" phones bundled with my soundcard.

They actually don't sound bad, and the rumble effect is kind of cool at first, but it gets old fast. The biggest problem is that the phones are VERY poorly constructed with the phone brackets made out of plastic. The first time I dropped them they broke at the brackets, so that was that. They're also pretty heavy.

I would definitely NOT recommend them unless these issues have been corrected.

I second the Koss choice, but I spent a little more (~$30) and went with the PortaPros. Biggest problem with them for computer use is the cord length and no on-cord volume control. Very comfortable and nice sounding, but don't expect them to take a lot of abuse.

Grado SR-60s are very sweet. My Live! 5.1 powers them well (half volume is about all I can stand)...using the LiveDrive IR headphone jack.

The Grado 60's or 80's work well and are in your budget. The Sennheisner 495's are very good closed phones that are strong on the bass. Denon also makes some good units in that price range, but they're hard to find.

edit = something else to keep in mind, is how much power you'll have to drive your phones. Generally an impedence of 100 or less will be okay, but much more and you'll be looking for a headphone amp to help out (for the fanatics, headphone amps are a prerequesite and will generally improve any headset,.....if your ears can detect the difference).

Correction: Sennheiser HD495's are open headphones, not closed.

Listed headphone impedence and sensitivity does not always tell whether they will require an amp to be driven properly to decent volumes. A good example are the HD495's. The specifications for impedence say 32 ohms, but those who have tried or owned (e.g. me) the HD495's will know that they are fairly hard to drive. I had to move my sound card's (Turtle Beach Santa Cruz) sliders for Master and Wav to the max to get decent volumes, but could not even approach loud, yet tolerable, listening volumes.

I eventually built an amp (actually several now) for headphones. I chose to build instead of buy an amp simply because it was closer to some of my old hobbies. You won't save too much money if you plan on building a decent/good headphone amp.

Sennheiser 580s or 570s for me.. Greado(sp) are pretty slick too.

BUT!

Headphones are a personal thing, try seeing if you can listen around to a few pairs and then decide!

Edit: (doh, i'm editing everthing tonight): on your budget: Greado(sp) fits the bill
