So after doing some more research do I really need a USB headset? I understand if you do not have a discrete sound card USB is the way to go.

But with my new mobo it now has the realtek 898 and from what I understand one of the best onboard audio, if that is true can I go for the corsair 1300 instead which is analog?

I use a pair of Audio Technica ATH-AD700s that sound good without a headphone amp and give excellent positional audio. I use them for everything I do on my PC and I use them when I want to play guitar after my wife goes to sleep). Should be in your price range, just pair them up with a stand-alone mic (although I use a el-cheapo logitech headset with only the mic connected and I just hang that around my neck).

Bought a set of G35s from Meritline last week for $70. This will be my first foray into gaming headsets. Right now my sound comes from an old Philips Surround Sound receiver hooked up to my optical port and it just...misses. I fault the receiver and possibly the onboard sound card. Thinking it over, and with Planetside2 coming up, I really wanted a solid headset for gaming on.

I love my G930. Ive had two of them. The first broke after 6 months or so(my fault i dropped and mic broke off).ogitech replaced it for free. Anyways the sound is wonderful with surround turned on, i havent noticed weak bass. Music sounds great, so do games. Only problem is once in a while the wireless will get interfered with and it takes like 5 seconds to sync back up. Happens maybe 3 times a week and i have to ask my vent buddies to repeat what they said. But its not a big deal. Battery life is fabulous and it can be plugged in and used at the same time

Have had my G930's for 2 weeks now and they are pretty good. Not as good as my Corsair HS1's were, but they have the added convenience of being wireless so I am satisfied. I find the Bass to be decent, it does bottom out on the rare occasion though, like when a Reaper ship in ME3 does it's horn blast thingy.

Another area they can be improved on is the structural stiffness. They are quite flimsy and I find myself having to adjust how they sit on my head a lot because it affects the audio. They are quite light and comfortable though.

Yet another issue is that when my system restarts, I need to unplug/replug my wireless dongle in order for the Logitech Software to find the Device. It sits in front of me though, so it's not too inconvenient. This might be a Windows or even Motherboard Hardware issue with my system though, after the most latest Windows Update I have been having other issues as well, such as Gadgets shutting down and some Startup Apps running, but not showing up in the System Tray. Anyway, I'm straying off on a tangent.

All in all, really good Audio with the convenience of being wireless. Would buy again.

I would go with a real set of cans. And then either get a Zalman clip on. Or a ModMic attachment.

Those hd555 should be good

Another thumbs up for the HD555's, I've been using a pair of them for about 18 months now. I use them for everything and the sound is very good for the price. Can't say how good they will fare with Realtek ALC898 since I haven't used onboard sound in years.

While I'm pretty sure the HD555 will sound better than any "gaming" headset there are a few things to keep in mind, first of all you wont get any surround effect unless you also get a dedicated soundcard to do it for you using Dolby Headphone or CMSS3D. Also they aren't the most sturdy headphones out there but I'll admit I somewhat abuse mine and I've only chipped the plastic frame after 18 months of daily use where I take them on and off quite a bit.

They are also open air cans so the bass isn't the best but its not bad either.

I have Psyko Carbons. True 5.1 surround sound. Great headset. Only drawback is the weight. They make another version called Krypton on sale for $99 right now. They may not be as heavy. Check them out. Psyko Audio

modmic + real headphones ...maybe duct tape for cables.

Edit: used to be cheaper, if you're using duct tape you can probly macgyver something up anyway.

the best "gaming" headset? Probably a STANDARD, traditional set of high quality headphones with a separate mic clip.

Truly amazing the way they can drum up sales by marketing average-ass quality headphones as "gaming" specific.

The sound quality from true headphones like Audio Technica's, Grados, or Sennheisers will blow the doors off these "gaming" headsets as far as accuracy and crystal clear sound quality goes.
