First, I know I am not gonna get anything great for $50. However, the graphics card in my uncles computer recently died and I'm looking to replace it. Its a stock HP machine, so probably not a super beefy power supply, etc. Any suggestions at that price point? AMD or Nvidia? Thanks.

you likely won't get anything good in that price range new
EDIT: noticed the link above, that's a reasonable option if pcie is what you need
I'd try ebay or refurbished items off newegg

another option is using this opportunity to build a new computer
llano cpu (with integrated graphics that beat $50 cards) can be had for $80-$130 + motherboard $80 + memory $60
assuming the psu is recent that's all you'd need
of course intel is another option, their integrated graphics is pretty good on the i5 cpu's these days.

what are the exact specs of this system ?
pcie or agp connector ?

It is PCI Express. I am not sure of the exact specs, but it I think it is an Intel Core 2 Duo.

Probably a used 40nm card, like a 5770 or 6770 (which is a rebadge so they are using the exact same GPU with different labels on it). You can also go for a used gts 450 but it's slightly slower... get it if it's cheaper than the 5770/6770.

If you don't mind higher power/noise/temperature, then the equivalents would be gtx 260 and hd 4870 but I'd rather pay a little extra for the 40nm cards I listed above.

What's the model number of your uncle's HP? Unless it was sold as a gaming PC, chances are it has on board graphics. If he's not a gamer this should be enough, and if he is a $50 card won't be enough either way.

OP never mention the purpose, if its not gaming, any darn card would work, probably can get a 5 series for under $30. I have a 3 series on a D950 machine, it has HDMI, low profile and all that, its connected to HD TV and it works perfectly well for Amazon Hulu Netflix and all that...

I just picked up a 4850 for my 2nd rig recently for $20.00 on Kijiji. (Similar to craigs list)

Brand new, 6570 is probably the best

If no gaming involved, a 6450 will do everything just as well for $20 AR

How would the 6570 compare with a Nvidia GT 430 (Fermi)? They are both about the same price. Which of the two is more power hungry?

If you game at 1920 x 1080 you will need at least an ATI 6770.

The best graphics card would be a used 6770/5770 at $50. I bought one used for $60 about 2 months ago. Its definitely the best bang 4 buck at that price.

The 6570 is much faster. Power use will be similar. But what does your uncle need it for? If he's just surfing the Internet, get a 6450. No need to spend $50.
