hi all,

I don't feel safe running an IBM Raid 0 array 24/7 for my server anymore... since 2 of them died on me.

What harddrives will you most likely to recommend for a box that runs 24/7? I'm looking for about 60gb space.

Any input would be appreciated!

We use Western Digitals for our servers at work. We use them for the boxes we build for our clients as well. We have no problems with them running 24/7. Although not used as often, I've had good results with Maxtors as well.

If you can afford another drive, I would ditch RAID 0 and go for RAID 5.

that way you have RAID 0 speed (IIRC), and if a drive craps out you can rebuild the data from the parity drive.

I'm using a Seagate drive on my home computer, which I keep on most of the time. It's been up for almost 11 days now

I agree, use RAID 5. THe best option is 3 36GB SCSI's in RAID, but from past disscussion, it seems like that is not within your means.

basically anything but IBM. maxtors, WD's, or seagates. all have proven very solid. maxtor's return policy seems to be the best, but hopefully you wouldnt have to deal with that

I have 2 15gb IDE IBM 7200rpm raid0... an ATA100 raid 5 card costs a lot of money so i might as well get a hard drive. I have a quantum/maxtor (as stated in my specs) which runs really quiet and it's pretty stable

thanks for the input it's much appreciated!

Stop using RAID 0 and use RAID 1.

And you should look into SCSI. I've had no problems with IBM SCSI drives.

i also have your setup kenleung: 2 15gb ibm 75gxp's in raid0

i suggest getting a Western Digital Caviar WD1200JB (or 2 in raid), they are $140 now.

But:
if i got 2 Western Digital Caviar WD1200JB's in raid0, how much performance would i see gain?
if i got 1 Western Digital Caviar WD1200JB in ide, would i see a big performance loss?

Having built dozens of servers at work I can tell you that a manufacturers label on the drive often does not mean that it was made by them. Most times drives sold by OEM's are made by "less known" in the hdd industry companies like Fujitsy and Hitachi but they perform just as well as IBM or WD. My $0.02
