Best hard drive to buy ??

I have made a couple of posts about a noise problem that I am having with my Seagate 40 gig.
Made me wonder what some might consider to be the best - and quietest hard drives out there.

The Raptors might be the most durable SATA drive.

I have been using Maxtor for 6 years,I have to buy them every 2 years because they get damage very easy but since they are Stable,very Quiet and fast im still using them

The PATA 7200.7s have their acoustic management forced on low noise. Which means they perform slightly slower than their SATA counterparts who have it on performance mode like you said.

The PATA 7200.7s have their acoustic management forced on low noise. Which means they perform slightly slower than their SATA counterparts who have it on performance mode like you said.

You know you can disable acoustic mangement on HDDs. Or you could enable it too, go to the HDD company's website and download a utility for your drive.

You can't do it on the Seagate 7200.7s but you could do it on previous Barracudas.

I've never had ANY (knock, knock) HD die on me, and I've used mostly Maxtors, but with a Seagate, Quantum, and a WD thrown in the mix. My Maxtors and Seagate (especially my present Maxtor and Seagate) have seemed to be the quietest, and my WD was certainly the loudest. Then again, the WD was an old 5400RPM 6.4GB Caviar (and still does its job, 7 years later). I do have a 120GB 7200 RPM WD, but It's still in the box. (hey, for $29.99 after rebate, who couldn't use a spare?)

Samsung P80: 3yr warranty, range from about Seagate's quietness to pretty much inaudible. A few stores advertise Nidec FDB Spinpoints, which are the quietest (the noise difference involves the different motors Samsung uses for the drives).

Anyone who's never had a HDD die on them hasn't used enough. They all die--even SCSIs. Back up data you really care about. Seagate and Samsung both have excellent reliability, though Seagate is known to be more customer-friendly.

Noticeable whine (with case closed, about 1 meter away): None
Noticeable whine (with ear next to harddrive): low swirl sound, much like a Panaflo

Any other relevant/interesting info: Some vibration, nothing compared to the WD that's ghosting to it. I'm very sensitive to high pitched noises (like SCSI drives, or a TV not able to tune in properly), and hear nothing high pitched but the video card fan--and that's my next quieting step.
I'll check the rest of the stats and update them once the ghosting is done (and I can remove the HDD cage).

Update: very audible but low frequency seeks, much like something is thunking against the drive's shell.

Mounted in a foam cradle, it completely inaudible with the case closed.

Terumo, Seagate 7200.7 'Cudas have nothing in the Nidec FDB Samsung drives. So far that's all I've dealt with (one PATA 160GB that is in my PC now, one SATA 80GB). Unfirtunately, as you can see there, about 1/4 of the people got ones with audible high pitched whines, which makes the more general recommendation Seagate, as they may not be as quiet, but have very little whine, and are very consistent. You also can't arguee much with the 5yr warranty.

I am pretty sure now that the hard drive is not the source of the sound - but the Thermaltake CPU fan/cooler. It starts high speed, and then slows down. Anyway, that is what I have been told.
