We have APX. So far they've provided pretty good service and quick call backs on the times we've accidentally set off the alarm.

You could find monitoring for far less than what ADT is charging. But it would necessitate you finding someone else to install your equipment. If you're a handy guy, I'm certain you could do it yourself.

It all depends on how important saving money is to you.

Shop price, your local companies probably all use the same monitoring center anyway, and even if they don't your contract will probably be sold to a diffrent monitoring company after one year.

Edit: I've owned and operated (and sold) 2 home alarm companies in the last 10 years. As far as monitoring goes, they are all the same because they all outsource it to one of the big national centers.

They are all a rip off. Get and ADT sign and stick it in your yard.

Exactly. It has been proven to work !
Also get some dummy security cameras for about $30. They are real cameras, just without the insides. They even have a red light that will flash off a 9v battery for over a year.

ADT and Brinks are okay if you don't mind paying the $40 month monitoring fee and being locked into a 2 or 3 year contract.

There are companies out there who will monitor an already installed alarm for much cheaper (around $10-15 month) via landline or around $20 a month if you have a cellular dialer attached to the alarm.

If thieves cut the phone line outside your house (which is very easy), your alarm is now useless...

Get wireless alarm system (GE makes several, just attach to windows and doors, install battery in transmitters and install the rest), install, connect to phone line and have it call your cell phone in case of break in. Make sure to get nice, loud siren alarm. Place stickers on doors/windows.

See, that's a reasonable idea and all, but it doesn't do much good when no one is home to use it.

Trip wire, servo off an rc plane... Of course there's the question of what to do with the UPS guy's body. Accidents happen. :hmm:

I use https://nextalarm.com/index.jsp

As long as it makes loud noises when tripped, it'll all work the same. Wireless sensors on each door should be good enough. I have motion sensors on the main hallways and some glass break sensors to cover downstairs, but you don't really need those.

Plan on getting a dog in the next month or so.

You know, I was pondering that situation myself...

Ironically one of the local security sales agents dropped in yesterday. Vector Security to be exact. Tried the soft pressure sell, and while my wife would like a security system, I'm not fond of $42/month for "peace of mind", though they do claim to have an On-Star sort of security system. While it sounds nice, it sent a big-brother shiver down my spine. As far as cutting the phone line, they do offer GSM wireless backup, but at an additional fee.

I told them to give me two weeks while I checked out their background and info, doing my due diligence. In the meantime, I let them plant their little sign in front of my porch.

Couple of German Shepherds and a shotgun should do the trick.

Putting an ADT sticker would be a good touch. Also wouldn't hurt to put and NRA member sticker. I know I wouldn't break into someones house who had an NRA sticker on it.

Laser tripped claymore mines pointed at possible entries into your home which can only be deactivated with a remote control.

Yeah, but then when someone sets it off, you need to file an insurance claim and get a new wall/door/window/house every time!
