Ok I got a dual xeon system I am rebuilding and was going to replace the HD with a new one. What is the best IDE drive now stil availabe that I can get for it. I is currently running an old Maxtor diamondmax 9 drive that is starting to give random errors. Anyone have any thoughts on this. Thanks for your input

You can also try one of those IDE to SATA adapters. Make sure its to convert SATA drive to IDE port or universal.

You could also install a PCI or PCI-E SATA disk controller card and boot to a SATA drive. That's what I do when I build Windows Home Servers using old PCs, installing Windows Home Server to a 1 TB SATA disk.

These last suggestions are good ones as it is not clear what the maximum size drive that your built on vintage IDE controllers will handle (eg, limit for the ATA 100 IDE specification; eg, my Asus P4 controllers will only see 137GB without using cylinder translation op code).

the newer wd drives are pretty fast - no ncq in pata - reliable. not cheap at all nor high density. seagate hasn't made a high density pata in a while - you can scour the seagate outlet and find some now and then 320/500 but they are 7200.9 which is essentially the same as your diamondmax 9 drive.

I don't know of anybody besides Maxtor that ever claimed ATA-133 capability on hard drives. ATA-133 was all the rage in 2003.

Pretty much all the manufacturers eventually adopted ATA-133 except Western Digital and Seagate.

This. A 2 port PCI SATA controller is less than $20 from Newegg. I wouldn't waste money buying a legacy HDD interface and become obsolete if you move the HDD to a newer system.
