I'm looking for an recommendation. Free is preferred.

I subscribe to about 10 RSS feeds, which I currently review through Google Reader.

I just created an Instapaper account, and have no idea how to use it.

What I want is an app that:
1) Syncs with my Google Reader account so that articles I've read are marked as read, starred articles are starred, etc. I want it to sync both ways.
2) Downloads unread articles for offline reading. So if I have a 50 unread articles, I want all 50 cached for offline reading. This part is critical since I'm running a wifi only iPad
3) Ideally: displays feeds in a format like Pulse or Flipboard

Does anything exist that does these things? To be fair, I'm just now toying with Pulse and have not yet tried Flipboard.

Feedler (free version from its FeedlerPro sibling) is what I use for RSS feeds and it works very well. It automatically syncs every time you open the app and I use it for 22 feeds (currently). I never had to manually add RSS feeds, as Feedler grabbed all of the feeds the first time. It also integrates with Instapaper (thought I have tried using Instapaper).

Even the paid version ($4.99 IIRC) is a very good deal (no ads).

I've been using Reeder for years, but it's not in a format like Pulse or Flipboard. I think they do RSS too, so you can use those apps if you want. Reeder is good for those with a huge number of RSS feeds. I subscribe to dozens of feeds, and I probably get close to 700 headlines per day.Been wanting to cull them, but they're all so interesting

I wrote an epic review of all the apps I've tried for an update of this thread. But apparently quick reply times out overnight and my reply was lost. Normally I copy my replies prior to submit but I figured AT was better designed.

Here's the cliffs of my lost reply.

Pulse, Flipboard: Different interfaces with pros/cons- it's probably a personal preference type of thing. Neither automatically synced with Google Reader instantaneously- I had to manually sync or wait for them to self-update. Both also downloaded DailyTech's feed in a "title + 3 sentences format". Both support offline viewing, I never dug deep enough to play with their implementations. The problem with both of these class-leaders is that read articles persist. I like to have a blank slate when I have finished reviewing all of my feeds, and that just isn't possible with either Pulse or Flipboard.

Reedller: No frills reader and gets the job done. Has offline viewing for the paid version only. This is the app I would have fallen back to if I couldn't find a better one.

Reedly: A gem I stumbled on. Interface is similar to Flipboard (a pro in my book), but there are a few different viewing modes. One will show read articles, but two other views hide read articles (which I think is ideal). There is offline reading built-in, as well as via Instapaper/Pocket/etc. I have not yet tested this, but I presume it works. The best part is that this app is free.

Newsrack, Reeder: Did not try these apps. Their descriptions weren't totally convincing, and there were no free versions to trial first.

Conclusion:
I was hoping that an app would download all articles and purge data as I read articles. As far as I can tell, no reader on the market today does this. All of the apps I tried require you to manually mark an article for offline viewing, which is not ideal for someone who wants to be able to take a wifi-only iPad and plow through some subscriptions. However, for the time being, Reedly seems to offer the best functionality for me at the low price of free. And as far as I can tell, it has been ad-free. Pulse and Flipboard are decent solutions, but their interfaces probably come down to personal preference. Feedller is a great no-frills solution. There's no way to assess Feedller's offline syncing without paying for the Pro edition though. In short, Reedly gives you the most function for free, in a very Flipboard-esque format.
