check out the site I've been working on... thejazzartist.com

There's links to plenty of artist sites, that some have downloadable bits of their tracks.

I'd recommend Jerry Bergonzi off the top of my head.

"jazz" is really broad - there's dixieland, big band, be bop, fusion, lots of other sub-categories I can't even think of right now.

I like Cannonball Adderly, Miles Davis (Kind of Blue has been suggested, it's my favorite Miles recording), Sonny Stitt, Bill Evans, John Coltrane

Coltrane - A Love Supreme

And check out some Dave Brubeck, Stan Getz, heck, even Sade and Nina Simone.

That's like saying, "what rock music is good?" Like wolfpapa was saying... there's also acid jazz, hard bop, post-bop, avante garde, etc... you'll eventually stumble into stuff you like.

A lot of the classic greats have been mentioned. (What? No Sarah Vaughn??)
For more funky stuff try out Herbie Hancock, he was on MTV for "Rock It" but don't mark that against him. Chick Corea, Art Farmer, and Kenny Burrell are also among my favs.

For something more contemporary, try Pat Metheny or Pat Metheny Group, Martin Medesky(sp?) & Wood, or Bela Fleck & the Flecktones. I also am listening to McCoy Tyner's albums "Port Au Blues" and "Soliloquy" for some piano jazz. And of course, my fav jazz station in the world which happens to have streaming is WBGO Real Jazz, Right Now. I've learned a lot about jazz just by listening to them.

Off the top of my head: pick up a copy of Deedles by Diane Schuur. So damn hot it should be illegal. If you don't like it after you buy it, I'll have someone here give you a double your money back refund!

Another vote for Miles Davis' Kind of Blue.

And I also second the nomination for Dave Brubeck (I just have his Greatest Hits CD).

Also, look for the album "Somethin' Else" by Cannonball Adderly.

Check out Chris Botti, he had a free concert on Directv a few months back. Hes pretty good.

I also like Wayman Tisdale(former NBA player) and someone mentioned Sade.Yeah she is pretty darn good too. Craig Chaquico, from Jefferson Starship is good too(all of these of course are IMO)

Note that these artists I mentioned fall under the "Smooth Jazz" label and are fairly easy to find on a local radio station that does smooth jazz.

If ya got Directv check out channel 839 and I think 840. Lots of jazzy stuff and no commercials.

Peace
