I can get an asus s96j laptop w/ a core duo t2500, x1600, 1g, and 80g hd for $860.
I also can get an alienware m7700 w/ an fx-60, a 7800gtx, 512m ram, and a 100g hd for $1200. Which one is a better deal?
The Alienware is definitely a better deal... if you are going to keep it on a desk most of the time. With a desktop processor and high end mobile video card it will most likely run very hot and be pretty heavy to carry around. Not to mention the battery life will be terrible. Just stick another gig of ram and you would be set for gaming
i have never owned a laptop before, are they overclockable at all? i am wondering mostly about the core duo because i hear once it is overclocked to around 2.6 it can run same or faster than an fx60.
The only laptop that i know of that can be OCed easily is the Dell XPS M1710.
They are both pretty good deals.
LIke OSx86 said, put more ram into that Alienware and you will be solid. I know that right now you can get 2GB of DDR2 667 SODIMM for less than $100 (i have my eye on it, just need to get paid ) and that isn't too bad for a gaming laptop
If you dont care about having a battery life of an hour go with the alienware. That FX-60 will suck the battery like no other. Not much portability at all which makes me wonder why you getting a laptop instead of an SFF. You could build and SFF that is cheaper and more powerful than the alienware.
