I'm in the market for a Laptop for college. I was wondering which laptops are generally better in primarily reliability, then in performance. I was looking at Toshiba's and Dells. Toshiba's have some nice prices compared to Dell, but I was wondering which one is more reliable. In addition are there any other laptop manufacturer's that I should search for?

I personally like Dell for their good service and support. I have had my last laptop for over a year now and have not had a single problem!

There's this little company called IBM that makes laptops. Some say they are the best in the business. I am one of those who says that. Dells are OK and Toshibas are fine, but neither one of those compares to a nice IBM.

all 3 produced very good quality laptops. IBM--nice but you have to pay premium for their laptop. Dell and toshiba--moot point--all depends on price/features/performance bargain.

Actually from some of the reviews that I have read the Toshiba's rate quite HIGH in reliability. If you have the $ go for the DELL, they just build good stuff. I personally have an HP but I have not had it long to comment on reliability. So far so good though...

Get a Dell. You won't be sorry.

If you want one that's almost as good for 50% more but a more recognizable brand name, go for IBM.

I have a Toshiba that my company gave me a almost two years ago. A Sattlite 4090XDVD zero problems until they upgraded me to WinY2K two months ago. A great machine IMHO.

Dell is better then Toshiba (but more expensive) IBM is very good but quite expensive, and if you want an ultra portable then Sony is the only way to go.

Just remember that most laptops are not sold by the company that manufactured them. Dell does not even make laptops. In fact the Inspiron line and Latitude line are made by different companies! Very few of those "big names" actually make their laptops. One of the few that does is IBM. There is a whole page about this stuff at Powernotebooks.com but I don't have time to link it right now.

I have a Toshiba Satellite 2755DVD, great laptop. I bought a Compaq laptop before this one, and ended up returning it because it was crap. The thing I like most about my Toshiba laptop is the fact that they include all the drivers on the recovery CD, that you can just install WITHOUT installing the whole disc recovery (so basically you can do a clean install of Win98/ME/2000 if you have the OS, and then install specific drivers off of the recovery CD).

I'm sure that other laptop manufacturers let you do this, but Compaq didn't which was a major reason I returned that laptop.

I like Toshiba laptops (newer ones) because you can actually change the BIOS settings thru Windows's Control Panel.

<< Compaq, Armada or Evo line >>

I wouldn't do Compaq at all. Why do you like them? The restore partition is one of the dumbest ideas I've ever seen.

I own two Compaq notebooks and like both of them, well constructed and no serious issues (except for one has a DVD drive that sounds like a jet). I have also owned Dell and Toshiba and used an IBM thinkpad 600. The thinkpad was probably the most reliable/tough (had a magnesium case), but it was expensive. The Compaq's are great, not a problem. The Dell was nice and the Toshiba had the most features for the money. I would recommend any of them.

I've owned 15 portable computers over the years. (But three were SPARCs.) And I've helped take care of a lot of others. I think many Dells and Gateways are okay, but Toshiba and IBM have it all over them with respect to industrial design and ergonomics. They're just better-finished pieces of equipment. If you don't mind a little cobbiness, you'll get more bang for the buck with Dell and Gateway. But if you're picky, you'll probably be happier with IBM or Toshiba -- particularly at the high end. I like the HPs I've seen, too, but haven't had any real experience with them. I have seen many Toshibas that you couldn't break with a hammer. I actually fell from a motorcycle and landed on top of one that was strapped to my back. It was filled with silty water. I rinsed it out with distilled, de-ionized water at the lab, then dried it with low pressure, low temp filtered air. It started right up and ran without a hitch the next day. I used it for two more years after that with nary a concern. Higher end models of IBM and Toshiba are the sturdier ones (not the ultralights, though). My Dell Inspiron 7500 is a nice unit with a good screen, but poor ergonomics. And the case is BUTT ugly! The case also feels a bit weak and too flexible, especially considering that it weighs almost 10 pounds. The bad thing about buying notebooks by phone or online is that you don't get to see them until after you've bought them -- unless you know someone who already has the model you're ordering. If ergonomics are important to you, be careful about buying something you haven't actually had a chance to hold and use.

My first portable was a Panasonic Sr. Partner with a 10 meg drive, 640 KB RAM, a built-in thermal printer, a built-in 10" CRT (Yes, a CRT!), and the best full-sized keyboard I've ever owned. Weighed just about 43 pounds, as I recall. I suspect that, whatever you purchase, it will be a bit easier to deal with than that computer was!

Good luck, and have fun with the new toy!

Regards,
Jim

I would recommend a Dell. I have had mine for a little over a year and a half now, and I don't have a single complaint. I also hear that their support service is number 1, but I've never had occasion to use it, if that tells you anything. Never tried IBM or Toshiba, but I am very happy with what I have. Just my $0.02
