Try one of the new HP Omnibook XE3's. They've got a nice screen and are nicely designed. I'm quite happy with mine in any case.
The Dell's are also good, but a little more expensive for pretty much the same laptop.

I would consider my laptop "one of the best" available.

Dell Latitude CPx

 • Intel® Pentium® III 650MHz w/ Speedstep?
 • 512MB Samsung SDRAM
 • 14.1" XGA TFT (NO dead pixels)
 • 12GB IBM hdd
 • 8MB ATI Rage mobility 2x AGP
 • Removable 6x DVDROM module
 • Removable 24x CDDROM module
 • Removable 3.5" Floppy Disk Drive module
 • Dell / Margi DVD to GO MPEG2 Decoder with cables
 • 3Com 56K global cellular PCMCIA modem
 • 10/100 3Com Lan PCMCIA
 • USB, serial, parallel, PS/2, IR, and s-video to projector
 • Dell DualPoint pointing device (both Touch Pad & Track Stick)
 • Black PS/2 mouse
 • Latitude C-Dock II full docking station
 • (2) Lithium-Ion batteries
 • AC adaptor with power cord
 • Windows 2000 installed (comes with 98SE original restore CD)
 • Microsoft Works Suite 2000
 • Books and Manuals
 • Leather carrying case

Here is a pic of the laptop
Here is a pic of the C-Dock docking station
Here is another pic of the C-Dock

This unit goes for $5589.00 on Dell's website, and that is WITHOUT the Margi card and CDROM. This is easily a 6000.00 laptop !!

If you are interested, email, ICQ, or enable your private messages.

I have very limited experience as i just got my 1st laptop. Anyhow, do you know if you want to lug a full sized laptop around or an ultra portable? I went with ultra portable.

Sony also makes an SR series which is basically even smaller and one pound less.. but the keyboards are too small to use really and the screens are also too small.

Sony Viao z505js

4lb with battery and really small
p3 650 speed step
128mb
12GB
12" tft
6MB graphics with video acceleration
10/100network
56k
usb/card slot
memory stick/firewire
16bit stereo sound with bass boost for headphones

I would go with either a Dell or Gateway. I don't know about right now, but it used to be that the Gateway's had excellent battery life.

i'm with Zucchini...here's my breakdown of laptop prereq.

1. Weight ( anything above 4-5 lbs is too heavy to be practical, at least for me)
2. Battery life
3. Display quality ( not size, but brightness and clarity)
4. speed ( RAM size + CPU speed)
5. warranty length and quality
6. HDD size
7. Extras (DVD, NIC, Modem, etc)

so my ideal laptop would be ~3 lbs with 10-12" XGA TFT with looong battery life. Additionally it would have to have at least 128MB of RAM and 600Mhz+ CPU . It would be nice if it had 3 year warranty and 12+ Gig drive. Additionally It would come with external 10/100NIC and a 4X+ DVDROM.

You might want to also check out Micron. Their stuff is just as pricey (perhaps even more) than Dell and Gateway.

My sister bought one for work and she has enjoyed it so far. I believe it came with

-P3 600-700
-128mb ram
-Win98
-ATi mobile rage 128 4mb (might have been 8mb, cant remember exactly)
-A large TFT active matrix screen (these are sweet, excellent picture for notebooks and can see it pretty well from alternate angles)

-DVD/Cdrom player (can swap with floppy when needed).
-56k modem
-10/100 nic
-docking station (ports for external keyboards, printers, etc)

Like I said, no complaints. I helped her set it up when I visited her. All I had to do was configure her ISP and then turn it over to one of her companies tech's to configure the network info so she could use it on the network at her work (would have done myself but had to leave )

You also have another option if you don't want to be on the Bleeding Edge, I bought a demo Compaq for $450.00 with 2 Li-ion batteries and added the following to it, K6-III+ @550 Mhz, 18 GIG HD, 160 Meg Ram, 4X DVD, and sold the old parts.
I now have $700.00 in it and it is pretty quick and useful for minimal bucks.

P.S. the only thing that sucks is the HPA screen, but for the money I can't bitch.

That Winbook specs look sweet... just looks a bit bulky.

<< Weight: 7.1 pounds with Lithium Ion battery >>

Yeah, a bit on the hefty side.

The problem is you can't do much about the size of big laptops.. eat up backpack space. Of course it doesn't matter as much if you don't plan to carry it around much. Oh yea, the viao's have magnesium alloy cases.

db--www.winbook.com....XL AMD K6-2 400 TFT 12.1 128 MB 3.0 GB PCMCIA 56k 20x CD-ROM $1,599 (SS7?).....is in their refurb section. However, I wouldn't recommend it, especially at that price.

I have a winbook that I got about a year ago. I felt it was a good value then. They also have a forum that provides some help and discussion. You might want to check

Thorn--yes, 7# is, at least, a bit on the hefty side.

And yes, you can clone your desktop to a laptop.

Some caveates:
1. You pay for lightweight. For me, the $$$'s weren't worth it. But, if I had to carry it alot, they would be.
2. Don't get a laptop with a built-in ESS POS 56K modem.
3. If I had it to do over, I probably would have gotten a DVD/CD, instead of just a cd player, since I'd like to play DVD's on it. As it is, now I'm hunting for a PCMCIA or USB DVD player. Anyone know of a good one?
4. Get the 8mb ATI 3D.

I like the look of the new IBM ThinkPad T21, mainly because it's pretty light and looks cool, but mainly it has the S3 Savage IV+ Video Chipset, probably the least-sucky mobile video chipset available - until we see the new Nvidia Geforce2 Mobile (Based on the MX), that is.
