I've been looking at newegg and the hot deals forum trying to find a good deal and sorta of found some, however I find alot of great deals fail to reach the 16 bit color that I need. Since I plan on going into graphic design as a major, I feel I should get a 16 bit color LCD. I also game from time to time on my PC so at least 12ms.

So any suggestions? Here's what I found so far(on newegg). Any experience and opinions on these models will help. Also, telling me about any good sales or deals on a lcd monitor of that criteria would be great!

I could be wrong but 16.7 million colors equates to 24 bit. And most LCD's are capable of doing 32bit color rendering. Anyways, I like the Viewsonic 19 wide screen which costs less than $250.00 or the Sceptre 19" wide screen. I use the Xg9 and I am happy but I wish the wide screen version was available then.

I was recently reading a thread on annandtech about this, most are 8-bit color(16.2 million) while others are higher (16.7 million). Some use dithering to help make up for the difference.

That lg pkme2 linked to looks good, hwoever it has only 6 or so reviews(all positive however).

6 bit = 16.2 million (w/ dithering)
8 bit = 16.7 million

Many think that 8 bit is the only way to go. I'd consider buying an LCD from a retail store with a good return policy, since Newegg isn't always too keen on taking back LCD's with dead/stuck pixels (just a thought.)

Sorry I don't have any specific advice on the models you're looking at Try to check the web for some though, Newegg reviews can be a little skewed. Might want to consider http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16824116375 as well.

Just to clear up confusion an "8-bit" LCD means 8 bits per channel (red green and blue) for a total of 24 bit color. 2^24 = about 16.7 million. No display device I know of is capable of 16bits/channel.

Not as sure about this but I believe a 6 bit LCD has to use dithering to reach 16.2 million colors in the first place, not to cover the gap to 16.7.

Thanks for elaborating. I thought most modern LCD's are capable of 24 bit color depth which equates to 16.7 million colors. Though most video cards goes as high as 32 bit color depth. I never realized they've started rating monitors (color depths)by each base color channel, i.e. 6 bit or 8 bit on each channel. Why they do this, is beyond me since I have not seen a monitor with different color depths or renderings on each basic channel (RGB). I guess you learn something new everyday.

why does everyone keep suggesting that view sonic given it has 16.2 million colors.....I'm going to be doing graphic works and those extra 100 thousand colors will be quite useful!

Well good thing you are an artist because you definitely are not a mathematician.

Are there 8 bit panels available in that price range that are actually 8-bit? A lot of them seem to be falsely advertised.

Indeed, math is for the birds! :wine:

And art is for the worms! Remember the early bird gets the worm!

Anyways,I recommend getting the Sceptre Xg-NagaIII 20.1" Wide screen. It has a wider viewing angle, excellent brightness and yes, 8 bit or 24 bit color depth, 16.7M colors. For an artist like you, viewing angle is also a very important spec because a narrow viewing angle can distort your color and linear perception on the monitor. I would recommend you physically check the monitor before you buy or any monitor you decide on.
