Will be used on a Q9550, and a PQ5 Pro. I intend to take the processor to (hopefully) 3.8Ghz, so it'll need to be able to cope with that speed.

yea go for the smallest or your favorite looker.

i see 1-2c difference in temperature benchmarks with so many different variables as ALL EQUALS

NH-U12P is the quitest for sure. Zerotherm is prolly a close runner-up. The other ones aren't loud by any means, just not as quiet.

This morning I just ordered the CoolerMaster Hyper 212 to go along with the TRUE Black.

Going to be doing some testing myself

The Core Contact Freezer can be a pain to mount depending on how big of a space you have to work in. With the motherboard out of the case it would be a piece of cake. However, if I'm going to be removing the motherboard anyway, I'd rather get a bolt-through cooler.

It's definately a step up from standard push-pin mounting (instead of the cooler using push pins, it has a base with push pins that the cooler clips to).

I've been out of the loop for a while. i just ordered a Q9550 and also in the market for a heatsink.

Do Thermalrights still come with concave bases requiring lapping?

Any recent heatsink reviews that compare the latest and greatest?

Thx

AFAIK you don't have to lap Thermal's. Best on the market are going to be any version of TRUE (Thermalright Ultra Extreme 120, pricey) or any clone of it (lower priced Xigmatek HDT-S1283, Sunbeamtech Core Contact Freezer, Tuniq Tower 120).

Link to latest ranking from Frostytech.

Thanks for info. Well, Newegg has the Xigmatek HDT-S1283 for $27 AR. Based on the price, I'm going to order that.

I have a Vendetta 2 decent, but I like the non-DHT Zerotherm FZ120S better. easier to install no fuss with TIM application. performs just a few degree shy of TRUE level coolers and very quiet. not too expensive.

I should be receiving my Cooler Master Hyper 212 this evening or hopefully in the morning at the latest. I plan on clocking my E7200 up to around 3.8-4.0 or so if possible. Will post with results soon

heh lots of talk.. i have few things to say.. TUNIQ TOWER aint a great cooler its just cheap.. (you will find them for around 22 used at most..) i have two of them just sitting in a box that have been upgraded to corecontact freezer..

so my question is.. is it really worth it to buy the bolt through kit.. like especially if i want to upgrade the cpu later and dont really like taking the mobo out of the case (should have room its antec 1200) so my question is.. corecontactfreezer with stock mounting or s1284 with stock mounting..

I love my Tuniq, keeps my 3ghz Q6600 at ~34 idle on all 4 cores. high 40s to low 50s~ when I used Prime 95 or Orthos. Fan was set on LOW also.

I've got a TRUE w/ a low RPM S-flex fan from Scythe. Packed into a P182, the TRUE is huge but fits just right. My E8400 runs very cool @ 400x9 with no issues. I can't actually tell if the machine is on by sound anymore..

I would go with the Core Contact Freezer. I have seen A LOT of reviews lately that puts it at the same level of performance with the TRUE coolers. Even two sites I read puts it 1-2 degree cooler. So yea, it is a very very good cooler.
