I am wondering which is the best linux distribution.
This is kind of an ambiguous question, i just want people to expose their opinion

Mandrake is definitely the easiest interface.

There is no answer...each one has differnet things that appeal to different people... its like asking:

WHATS THE BEST COLA? COKE, PEPSI, RC, DR PEPPER, etc...

Some people will like coke..some pepsi, some big red...

Pick one, install it... try it... then after a while try another...eventually you will find one that YOU LIKE the best..

But I do recommend Mandrake, SuSe, or Redhat for first install, because they are just easy to install... in Fact ZDNET says they are easier to install than Windows 2000.

i dont agree with the "easier that win2k", but i know redhat and mandrake are very easy. i'd go with redhat, mandrake is a little toooo easy, but thats just my opinion

and it's a little too cutesy for my taste.

but overall debian is definitely my fave.

Easiest: Mandrake (I'm running 8.1 at home right now)
Most Powerful: Debian

Redhat is kinda in-between for me. I'm using it on my laptop right now...

I'll have to go out on a limb with this one and say that Slackware is the best
Linux distribution--well almost... nothing beats making your own.

I am building a Linux machine to learn on and I ordered both Mandrake 8.1 and Red Hat 7.2 from Cheapbytes. I'm not sure which one am I going to install though. I don't want to dual boot, so I'll pick one.

For the most powerful Linux distro I would go with Debian and it's powerful apt-get system.

For the easiest distro my award goes to Mandrake, but I like RedHat better because it has got more useful command-line utilities that MDK lacks IMO.

Debian hands down for me.

I dont need pretty installers and stuff, I want a powerful and flexible system.

Slackware would be a contender if they'd just dump BSD Init and go with SysV like most(all?) other distros.

One of these days Ill stumble on the quote again, but during the big linux hype (you remember, a bunch of morons made linux look bad in the market place by starting companies without a way to make money) someone from Sun said that Solaris was thier version of linux. It was supposed to be funny, and when I see threads like this I think they deserve a little BS.

EDIT: Hope you get well soon, I was sick most of last week and only started getting over it over the weekend (one of the reasons I didnt show up online at all)

I use RedHat 7.2 and I like its menu arrangements better than Mandrake 8.1 but overall Mandrake is easier to use. But I still like Redhat better Debian's apt is really nice, and updating and getting new packages is really simple and useful

Forgot to say this: The worst linux distribution ever for me is Red Hat 7.0, it has more bugs than my garden.

RedHat is known for bad .0 releases, so that wasnt a surprise.

I really liked their 6.1&6.2 releases. Every 7.x distro has some bugs or some problems.

I havent used 7.x much, I just heard everyone complain about 7.0. 6.2 was probably thier best version ever. Kind of like an old BX board...
