GWAR hands down. Most outragous, creepy, ridiculous, terrifiying, hilarious, and disgusting show I have ever seen in my life.

If you haven't seen Jimmy Buffett in concert... you have no right to be posting in this thread.

Too hard to say. As for bands currently/recently touring: Wilco, Broken Social Scene, Daft Punk, LCD Soundsystem, Arcade Fire, and The Hold Steady are about as good as it gets.

tool

have seen

roger waters, rhcp, radiohead, pixies, chemical bros, eric clapton, g3, foo fighters, white stripes, QotSA, flaming lips (unfortunately), linkin park (also unfortunately), a perfect circle, audioslave, janes addiction, AFI, probably a ton of others that i'm leaving out

to the poster above:
given the choice between a giant arena and a small theater, i'd pick the theater anyday! great acoustics > shtty metal benches

The best live act I've ever heard, oddly and ironically enough, was the band Live.

Never was a big fan of theirs, but they wowed everyone bigtime at the HFStival in DC years back.

Always loved them live!

Another one of the best bands I have seen is Green Day. They were opening for Bad Religion a couple of years before Green Day got big and they were fantastic. I have never really liked their music, even back then, but it was still one of the best overall shows I've been to and they, in particular, were quite good.

Why 'unfortunately'? I've never seen them live, but have definitely always wanted to. Interested to hear why they sucked live.

Zeppelin was the best live band ever- they've won just about every magazine pole on this subject ever.

(I'm a big fan too, so I'm biased ).

Picture this if you will...

1 song..
5 minutes of talking about politics
1 song..
5 more minutes of talking about politics
lead singers get into giant ball thing, and crowdsurfs over the stage: 5 minutes
1 song...

repeat. repeat. repeat. Have seen them 3 times (they opened for RHCP). They got booed 2/3 shows. I've seen some pretty sorry opening bands, but I've NEVER seen anyone get boo'ed like TFL

I don't like their music, I don't like their stage setup, and I don't think they're very good. Those are very subjective opinions. However, I can say objectively that they put on a piss poor live show. 3-6 songs in an f'n hour? christ.

Hmm, well I really like their music, but yeah, that does sound pretty ridiculous. I wonder if they would be any better as the headliner? Maybe they just screw around when they are the opening band?

Weird.

Best concert I ever went to was Lollapalooza 92... Holy crap, RHCP, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Ministry. All of them put on a heck of show.. Best part of it was that Pearl Jam was up an coming and was actually the opening band with RHCP headlining.. Can you believe that?

I remember it well (boy was I young) and actually RATM played at the show in Vancouver as well (not sure if they played everywhere else). What a blast!

Another vote for Tool.

Although I will say I almost voted for The Mars Volta. Cedric and Omar are pretty fun to watch on stage live. I've never seen another frontman pull so many cool stunts on-stage while performing. Omar's cool too, tossing his axe around and stuff.
Cedric's antics with the mic, the mic stand, the amps, the drums et al are just awesome though.

A sampling:

Definitely the one band I want to see live more than any other right now. Unfortunately I missed them last time they rolled through here.

that is what i'm talking abut, big arena rock experiences.

I thought of DT too, only because you can tell how much they enjoy playing and it translates into the audience. I'm actually watching my Live at Budokan DVD right now and it's amazing how cohesive the band is and how their energy and enthusiasm is conveyed to the crowd.

However, I would still have to say that Metallica puts on an even better show. Try as he might, JLB's crowd interaction skills are severely lacking compared to Hetfield's.

I love that Steven Tyler's voice hasn't deteriorated at all through the years. He still hits every damn note with the same power he did 30 years ago.
