What is the best all around martial art to learn for self defense against the mean world out there?

Any why is that one the best?

I hear brazilian ju jitsu is supposed to be really practical and gritty, but I know next to nothing about martial arts.

I'd probably do tai chi myself, just cause it sounds imposing a mystical

Judo. No punches needed, and its quite easy to do. I did it for 4 years when I was younger.

For self defence I would have to agree with Judo.

Krav Maga is quite nasty... Israeli street fighting, if you can call it a style...

I took a class about a year ago. For self defense -- I think it is by far the best style. It is set on basic, easy to remember, and effective strikes. I am really glad I took that class.

I'd be interested in Krav Maga for the practicality, and Muay Thai just to see how it is.

TKD is crap. I took it for 3 years when I was in high school. It is quick to learn and get decent at, but if you've been doing it for a few years, you'll peak quickly. I also learnt some Hap Ki Do along with TKD and that was bad ass. It is similar to the the chinese system of Chi-na.

It really depends on what your goals are. There isn't really one best system, just some that are better then others in certain situations.

I now do Guang Ping Yang Tai Chi (64 movements), and am looking to learn the 108 movement Wu style long form. I have learnt the old frame for Chen style Tai Chi, but I don;t like that. Its pace is too quick, and it is too deeply rooted in Shaolin.

You're just going to have to go to a different places and see what you like.

I take Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and I will have to say that is the best. We try to incorporate the moves from other martial arts, wrestling and Judo. Those moves aren't illegial in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, but you can't submit people in the other martial arts.

Another martial art I would love to take is Muay Thai.

There is no one 'best' martial art, so much rests with the artist.

Edit - How come Shaolin isn't on the list? Most the martial arts on there evolved from Shaolin.
