My friend is taking Wing Chung, a form of Kung Fu that is called the "best." What do you think?

Best for what? Against a group of people you need a "quick" combat style - jiu jitsu or judo aren't what you want here - but 1 on 1 its going to be hard to take out somebody really practiced in grappling. Of course, ask yourself, is anyone really capable of taking out two competent attackers at once anyway?

I would say that for most of us taking on more than one person at once is really just not a practical goal, and thus if I could learn only one it would be jiu jitsu or another grappling style - adding some striking on if possible (really just to counter the other guy adequately until you can bring it to the ground).

Standard striking martial arts are inferior one on one to another well trained grappler, because as soon as that guy gets in close its all over for you.

The general theory is there isn't "a" best martial art, i've got a fair amount of experience in 5 different ones, and everything has it's pluses and minuses. I'm not big into arts like tkd but it surely teaches people good kicks and I would surely say there is something good to take out of every art, just know what to take and what to leave.

Daniel is right - the best fighters in the world will never rely on only one martial art, you need to crosstrain - I would just emphsize jiu jitsu if I had to

I was learning jiu jitsu and tae kick boxing at the same time from one guy a few years back and I thought they complemented each other excellently.

Master: "What is the highest art you hope to attain?"

Lee: "To have no art."

That aside, Jeet Kune Do is the best art.

AMISH, HAHAHAHAHAHA, dont worry about it, leave the first post as is!!!!

if i could learn one fighting style, it would probably be capueta, however its spelled.

p.s. fortunately, i consider myself a grappler, and will never learn capueta. i rely on my wrestling skills to get me out of situations, i cant fight from a distance, but i have a pretty hard fist. i can hit steel with about 80% force multiple times wihtout feeling serious pain, just a little bit of pain, but nothing bad.

mustang I'm sure you walk around with a quarterstaff all the time eh? If we're going to use kendo as a martial art I Like to use a two-handed sword.

i definitly did NOT kill my nerves. i can still feel pain, i just made my fist more tolerable to pain.

i thought it was a pretty well known fact that the body adapts. supposedly, the body is capable of ANYTHING.

im just loosely following some old martial arts techniques of turning the body into steel

skoorb??? kendo is done with a quarterstick? i thought the wooden sword was for practice and as u get better u actually practice with real sword.. even tho an expert kendo master can use wooden stick or even a rolled newspaper to break bones... i thought u had some martial arts experience? are u saying kendo is not a martial art? did he say martial arts without weapons?.. ahhh exactly.

I have none with kendo - anything that relies on the user carrying a weapons at all times is grossly impractical.

I would take Ching Ching Pow.

It comes in many calibers, also different shapes and sizes.

I don't put too much stock in martial arts. I bet I could take most of you out with my "Big-mann-smak" technique if we ever got into a fight.

Remember the Indiana Jones movie where the guy comes up and does a 10-15 second intimidation demonstration with his sword. Then Indy pulls out his gun and shoots him. Point made.

Know what you are going for but I just need the typing practice.

Interesting story behind that scene in Indiana Jones....

Indy was SUPPOSED to have this huge, spectacular fight scene with the guy. Much choeography, weapons, fists, all kinds of mayhem. --BUT HARRISON FORD HAD A RAGING CASE OF THE SH!TS. He didn't have the time or the bodily-function control to do the fight scene, so he suggested he just shoot the guy, and they let him do it. Now it's one of the most memorable scenes in the whole Indiana Jones saga.

But I still say.... you little wing-chung pansy-boys wouldn't last a minute with the big-mann-smak.

I think the 'best' martial art would be lost by now ... no gifted student to pass on the techniques, etc. while you have all these other stuff that any chum can go and learn. I'm not saying that they suck, I'm just saying that there were prolly something that really kick ass a long while back.

I still think KYUDO rocks though.
