Best MB for Slot 1 PIII 1Ghz+ OC?

I've recently acquired a factory unlocked PIIIB 1Ghz Slot 1 proc. I'm mainly an AMD man, but it was very cheap. Now I need a good board to OC it with. I've been looking around and I think an Asus P3V4X might be good. Manuals say the multi only goes to 8, but the FSB goes to 150! 8x150=1200! Anyone have any experience with this board? My only problem is it's Via, and I'm pretty lukewarm about them right now being a Abit KT7A owner (686B, AND a Northbridge bug? Plus they don't do their NewCaps correctly, but that's a different story.) I would prefer a 440BX, but I don't think they'll do 1Ghz or 133FSB, will they?

This will be a server board, so I don't care too much about fast AGP. Must be SDRAM, must be SUPER OC-able, can be Micro-ATX.

Anyone?

Intel cpus can't be unlocked. You can only increase the FSB. A BX board that supports Coppermine would be fine. The best choice would be an Asus Cusl2 or MSI 6337pro, both 815 chipsets.

Desmoquattro, I have several PIII 1 GHz rigs. None are OCed but I'm thinking about it. I do have an Abit BE6-II running a Celeron 566/850 in it right now.

The MB that I'm using for the PIIIs is a SuperMicro 370-SSA. I bought it for stability and not OCing. Now that some time has gone by OCing seems to be on my mind a little more. The SuperMicro does not have any instructions in the users manual about any FSB changes except for dip switches to select Auto, 66, 100, or 133. I've been told that in the past there were SuperMicro MBs that could have their FSB settings changed with a little "wire work". Do you know where I could find out any information on those lines?

There's a way to change the FSB in Supermicro boards directly from the Bios, but I can't remember where and what's it called (altough I do remember it wasn't obvious, and it wasn't called "FSB adjust" or "Overclocking settings" ). Well, I think it had to do with something like... Mode? As in Mode 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5? Something like that; look for something that has an option from 0 to 5... and basically, you could set the FSB to 75,83,112, and 133 depending on your choice.

NOTE: This is in regard to a different Supermicro mobo, but I think they all have similar bios setups.

Thanks for that Dieselman,

I might just start a new thread and attract some attention to my somewhat OT question.

np; as I said, look something that remotely sounds like

mode 0
mode 1
etc...

but I am not sure if the keyword is "mode", or "xyz", or something else; but if you look around everywhere in the bios, you will find it. If you do a search for supermicro either here or at 2cpu.com's forums. I am sure you will the detailed answer.

Razor1000, I am also looking for a cheap P3 1 GHz Slot 1 but the lowest I see is about $230. Have you seen any lower priced than that? Thanks. webley

He said Factory unlocked, there are a few out there. THey would be engineer samples though, really hard to get a hold of.

No. Looking at my three CUSL-2s I can't see a Slot 1 on any of them.... Hmmm, let's look over here. Here's a Tyan Trinity 400/1854s, which has both a socket 370 and a Slot 1. Hmmm...very stable, good overclocker (better with an Iwill Slotket). Yes, if I had a slot 1 chip I think I'd check out the Tyan. Mine ran a 500E at 750 for over a year and now is running a 750E at just over a GigHz.

Go with either the P3V4X or an Abit VT6X4. both are VIA 133a chipsets. Both have 686a southbridges.

VIA 133a boards with the 686b southbridge do not have the SB live problem. Only 686b's on KT boards seem to have the problem -- I think it has something to do with the T-Bird BUS.

I have a VT6X4 right now with my PIII 700 @ 980mhz. It is all softmenu, jumperless CPU speed settings. With the latest BIOS, you should be able to get to a multiplier of 10 (or higher). THe only thing I don't like about the board is no BUS speed options between 140 & 150 mhz.

The board suggestions are good, but your chip is highly unlikely to go over 1.1 gig, it just ain't in 'em. The 700's and 750's will often run about 1 gig, depending.

I don't know what kind of server you'll be operating, but overclocking one is generally not good, reliability is king here. If it's for business, don't even think about it, the boss will hang tender parts of your anatomy on a plaque in his office.... 10K SCSI and lots of RAM will make it snappy.
