Best media player for KDE/Kubuntu

I'm looking for basically a WMP11 replacement for my Kubuntu install. I will be playing mostly MP3's and Xvids on this unit. I tried Amarok that came with the unit for MP3's but it locks up on the "click here to install mp3 codec" and I have to force the program to shut down and I haven't even tried video files with it. Any good recommendations?

I got it working with VLC. Another question, do they make an AC3 filter equivalent for Linux? I need it to bump up the audio on my personal dvd rips since I converted them with Auto GK.

How long have you waited for Amarok to do it's thing? It might just be slow getting to an Internet resource or something. And you could just try this https://help.ubuntu.com/commun...60c1ad6b68823328906067 and see if that adds MP3 support to Amaraok.

Personally I use mplayer for all of my videos, but I'm not sure if it's packaged for Ubuntu.

AFAIK mplayer is available for ubuntu but it never worked right for me when I used kubuntu. I prefer mplayer to all other players though.

Xine maybe? mplayer should do it as well. Make sure you have LAME installed and update.

I user MPlayer for video and Sonata/MPD for music. Mplayer works like a dream ***most*** of the time. VLC is a failsafe backup.

They generally call it' 'AC3 passthru' or whatever. That is when you take a video and output it's audio directly into a digital surround sound receiver which decodes it into the individual channels. This requires your sound card to be configured correctly. It's been a while since I bothered with anything like that... Basicly instead of doing audio proccessing the system just dumps the digital signal raw through your audio card and into the receiver.

Or are you talking about taking a 6 channel audio and encoding it to AC3?
Or maybe taking AC3 and decoding it into multi-channel audio file or decoding it so that it plays surround sound out through your multiple channel sound card or something like that?

Not sure what you mean by 'ac3 filter'. I am not a sound expert.

Installing the stuff described there should pull in any sort of media codec that you'll need.
